Starting HCC L.V.N. program in the fall, worried...

All i seem to hear is how bad the job market is right now for ANY nurses let alone new grad LVN's. It has pretty much taken some of the wind out of my sails :(

I have a month old son and I hope this isn't going to be a fruitless venture. I am going through LVN b/c the waiting list for RN is long, I can start working (or so i thought) and get my ADN at the same time, and I would have experience coming out of the ADN program.

Anyone else starting this fall???

I can't specifically speak for Houston proper, but here's a bit of advice that I've seen posted on here a LOT. :)

1) Network while you're in school. Every clinical site is an opportunity to get to know the people in charge. Don't turn your clinical days into a job hunt (you're there for a reason.. LOL) but get to know people and if the opportunity arises, ask what it takes to get a job at a site you particularly enjoy.

2) Be willing to take work in an area of nursing that isn't your first choice. You can hold out for your dream position, but that first year of experience is so important, why would you? You're more likely to get the job you want after you've put in that first year. Take what is available! (Not advocating putting up with unsafe environment... just be willing to do LTC or something for a year.)

3) Find a way to set yourself apart from your fellow new grads. Good GPA, recommendations from professors, good resume and cover letter, etc.

4) Never give up! :D Have faith in yourself and keep looking until you find a job. It is really easy to feel defeated if it takes a month or more to find a job... but don't let that set of negative feelings take over. It will show when you interview if you have lost hope...

Good luck and congrats on the upcoming program! :)

Edited to add... I am starting in August at Victoria College - Hallettsvile with very similar plans (LVN program, work while working on ADN) and it is scary! :) But I believe it will work out.

Thanks! Yeah that is pretty much the advice I am adhereing to. I know if my GPA is in order and if I'm open minded, I'll be fine. I'm fortunate to have worked at a home health agency since 2003 so I've already been able to net work.Good luck to you as well!!! I'm pumped for this hahaha I think I'm one of 3 or 4 guys this year lol. My fiance LOVES that hahaha
