Starting CNA course

Published

So starting Monday, I will begin my CNA training course and eventually take the state exam. Shouldn't be too hard considering I have already taken AP1 and AP2 (I didn't do to well in the 2nd one) and Medical Terminology. I want to eventually get my RN but I need a steady job to get me there. It's tough making minimum wage supporting yourself through school.

But today I got a hard knock. I work as a cashier and it just so happens we started talking about CNA. I tell her I'm studying Nursing (when really I am not right now and don't want to seem anymore hopeless than I do now lol). Anyway, she's a CNA and she tells me flat out that she gets paid minimum wage. I'm pretty shocked to say the least considering I have seen job ads on craiglist (once I get my CNA, I'm going to sign up for Linkd and Monster to look further) for CNA jobs going for 10 an hour. 10 would be great but minimum wage? No way. Some are 8 or 9 an hour. I'm paying 900 bucks for a certification and all I get is a 2 dollar increase from my current job? Not excited but it is what it is.

I want to eventually become a Registered Nurse because it is a very challenging and respectable career. Plus the money isn't too bad.

Anyway, I am still going to go through with the CNA course and I'm pretty happy about it. I just hope to find a CNA job that pays at least 10 an hour considering my experience. What is it? Well I have an older brother who is 29 that is Downs Syndrome with severe OCD. If I can take care of him, I can take care of anybody. But then again, everyone is different right?

FYI, I am male. Maybe that will help in my quest.

Anyway, any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Focus on your class and enjoy the opportunity to learn in this field. Never rely on what one person says about salary or jobs, some people are bitter and don't tell the truth.

Your experience with your brother will be helpful when you start job hunting, as will the courses you've taken.

Good luck!
