Hi Everyone!

I was wondering if anyone out there is going to be at St. Jude this summer for their summer externship program? Also, if you've done the program, could you tell me what I'll most likely be doing every day?

Thanks!

Oh! And it's the one in Memphis, Tennessee. :)

Specializes in interested in NICU!!.

wow that sounds like fun and alot of learning experience for you, when you get done come back and let us know how it went.

i've always wanted to work in a children's hospital

This message is to coonkine. I hope you get this! I can't reply a private message because I'm not very active on this site.

I applied to the externship in on March 1st for the summer externship. I received a phone call in early May to schedule a phone interview which happened maybe a week later? The interview was very short, maybe 5-6 general questions. And then I got a phone call in late may for a position. I started in June, but you can work with HR when you start.

When writing your cover letter, you will want to specify what area you're interested in. I didn't but I got to choose between the Transplant and Leukemia unit during my interview. I'm not sure if it's because the nurse managers go through your application before the interview or if it's based on what openings are available.

Good luck!

Hello,

I am extremely interested in the St. Judes summer nursing externship and was wondering how competitive it is? And for all of you that got accepted, what grades you had and if you had any experience? Also, how many people do they accept? Any advice on how to be a competitor for the position would be absolutely amazing!! Thank you so much!!!!

Hi @hppychmln I was wondering if you could provide me more information on the application process and your experience during the internship! I am applying on March 1st and it is my absolute DREAM to work there! Thanks so much!

what is the typical class size for the summer class?? I know at TWU they usually accept 100 students per semester, so is there a limit at UTH??

Hello all!

I did the externship Summer 2017. There were only 8 of us. St. Jude is the greatest place to work, but it is a fairly small hospital so 8 externs puts 2 in each unit (Leukemia, Solid Tumor, ICU, and BMT). My extern class had 2 that were already techs at the hospital and they didn't interact with us as much, so it seemed like our class was only 6. So the first 2 weeks are orientation and those days ARE paid. You'll learn about the hospital and nursing care with our St. Jude Patients. This is super helpful because coming out of nursing school who really knows what a bone marrow transplant is? So after you finish up orientation you move to your unit. The rest of the summer you work 3 12s a week. We work days and you have a mentor that you work with their schedule. Throughout the summer, you'll also work on an evidence based practice or quality improvement project and then present it at the end of your externship.
