Anybody know which states do/do not require social security numbers in obtaining licensure. This would pertain to foreign born nurses. I think California accepts the Hospital tax id number, but not sure.

You will need a SSN to begin work anywhere, can you be more specific?

It is my understanding that a foreign nurse wishing to take the nclex would have to first apply to a state board. If state nursing boards require ss numbers, how do foreign nurses get their licences when they don't have one yet.
NY Board of Nursing doesn't require a SSN. You can write the NCLEX for almost any state, they just will not issue you a hard license until you get a job offer and then are able to submit a SSN# to them.
Follow what is posted about getting licensed in NY under the International Forum. NY will actually issue a hard license without the SSN#, so it is much easier to endorse to any state afterwards.
You may wish to check out the International Forum, there is quite a bit of info that will be useful to you.
