I'm looking for advice on specialty options. I'm adult-gero NP and really don't want to work in family practice. I prefer to know a lot about a little. I'm looking at specialty options right now and having a hard time deciding. I would prefer to treat just one disease if possible. I like to see objective and measurable results. I prefer minimal charting. And I like to work with my hands more than my brain. I'm considering wound care NP right now. Are there any other specialties you guys are working in that go along with this? Anyone working in wound care have any suggestions on pros and cons of wound care?

I do not know any outpatient /clinic specialty with minimal charting, specially if all medicine is objective and measurable now, even psychiatry. All privet/ out of pocket practices are with less charts/paperwork, but still as a preventative care for lawsuit ,there is some documentation.

I think, Laser /dermatology is less paperwork and you need to be "handy". You still need your brain for education/communication/advertising/ connection. For sure in GYN outpatient clinic you need to be handy ,quick and you need your brain and experience.

If you want to treat one disease go for HIV or Hep C clinic, actually in Manhattan area The Mount Sinai Hepatitis C Outreach and Treatment Program they are looking for NP ( NP is retired after 15 years of work in this company).

In every area you need your brain!!!

Good Luck.

Specializes in Outpatient Psychiatry.

Allergy Clinic. And make a boat load of money doing it!

Yes, very good idea Allergy/immunology , I did some per diem as RN with Immunology research Department of Pediatrics (Allergy & Immunology) in the Bronx Montefiore hospital /office based clinics. I was well trained to "Mix vials by guidelines" for shots and became familiar with allergy testing and Xolair injections .We had several side effects "emergency" anaphylactic shocks and NP/MD/RN needs to be handy, fast and very experienced. Specially if it is office based practice. You still need your brain for education, follow up and fast emergency treatment if allergy shots are given in the office. Good luck!!

Specializes in allergy and asthma, urgent care.

I work in Allergy/Asthma/Immunology. I see both peds and adults, as do many specialty practices, so you would need to be a FNP to work in those that do. You still have to do a lot of charting for office visits, and some of the patients are quite complex. I've templated my EMR so I can just breeze through charting for most routine visits. You definitely need your brain to diagnose allergic and immunologic conditions, as they are not always cut and dry. You also need to have a good background in internal med, so you understand how other conditions can play into allergic diseases and vice versa. It's not a high stress job (except when you have 3 patients at once in anaphylaxis and you're the only provider on site), but it's certainly not a walk in the park, either.
