South Dakota State University Aberdeen ABSN Spring 2019

Published

Just wondering if anyone else applied to SDSU's ABSN program in Aberdeen? I interviewed, and I am waiting to hear back on an admission decision in the next week or two and wondering if anyone else is in the same boat? Or if anyone has gone through this program in the past and could tell me about their experience! There's not a lot of threads out there about this school, which I guess makes me hopeful that there are fewer applicants and gives me a better chance of getting in.

Hey! Look into the Sioux Falls location for SDSU accelerated program. It goes from August to August and it's easier to move out the during the Summer.

as long as you have all the requirements met for admissions you'll get it. It's not competitive because no one wants to live in SD. With Aberdeen site, only 8 students are currently there and I think they can take up to 40 or something like that.

reach out to the advisors and get the ball rolling. It's an amazing program and I feel so well prepared to take the NCLEX and I also got the speciality unit I wanted before I even graduated.

don't waste time applying to Oregon school and just go straight to SDSU. It's way cheaper to pay out of state tuition and you'll be done before you know it.

ages: mostly mid 20's. I did this program in my 30's and there were a few students who were 40+. Last year there was a student graduating at 49 and pursuing CRNA school. It's a good mix. Literally just go for it!

Hey thank you so much for your response! So good to know there's a good, solid program out there that isn't impacted like the programs are here, in Oregon.  You gave me such incredible insight and I truly appreciate your help! I'm in my early 30s so we're in the same boat. How was it transitioning from Oregon to South Dakota? What is one thing you wish you had known before? How was the overall pace of the program? Did it feel manageable? Or did you feel rushed?

And how was it moving to Aberdeen in January! I will definitely consider Sioux Falls I just feel like Aberdeen would be the easiest and the cheapest path.

Thank you so much!

Oregon to SD is a fine transition considering all your doing is nursing school. The program pace is great. It's fast but I liked it better that way. No time for procrastination. The hardest most intense part of school is Semesters 1-3. Semester 4 has critical care content with challenging exams but the other classes are like.. easy. Semester 5 is easy community health, professional class and capstone. I was able to complete my capstone hours in 3 weeks, then moved back home to Oregon early- I just flew back to Aberdeen to take the last week of exams and graduation.

Sioux Falls has more to do and a better airport in case you wanna go home to visit. Aberdeen is small but if you get roommates both places are affordable to live while in school. I really loved my Aberdeen professors though!

just know that burn out is real so have some sort of self care to implement. I joined the YMCA and actually read novels. Also for SD it gets very cold and the wind is awful. Make sure to have a good Winter coat and snow boots. You'll also have time to check out surrounding areas like rapid city, etc.
