What are you supposed to be doing with the interfaces??? I believe we need more details on your post because from what you have above, i'm not really sure what kind of help you need.

I need to provide screen shot (or picture) of the interface and write why this interface is good. I think it more about the subject "Human Computer Interaction".

Here is original description of the assignment, if that it would be any helpful.

List at least three software applications; their screen interface and the feature you would want to see to encourage to you a computer system at nursing station. Justify your answers. In your answers you may wish to insert a screen shot(s) of the application to enchange your answer.

Hope this helps.

Thanx for ur relply,

Mat

Hi Mat,

Not sure what your instructor considers "application software" that is used by nurses. Would a bibliographic database such as CINAHL be applicable? or do they want you to access proprietary software applications such as those found in hospitals and used by nursing for charting, care plan documentation, order entry, results reporting, admission/discharge/transfer, charge capture and or medication administration? Additionally there are multiple handheld applications used by nurses such as drug guides, calculators and reference guides. Also unsure if your assignment is to access/view/work with the applications or to describe/explain what mechanisms constitute the "interface" between the system(s) and the nurse users.

Thanks for your reply.

According to my understanding, I think instructor is asking about the proprietary software applications such as those found in hospitals and used by nursing for charting, care plan documentation, order entry, results reporting, admission/discharge/transfer, charge capture and or medication administration.

I am basing my understanding on what the instructer had told me that we are dealing not only with the content presented but also with how it is presented to the user. So I am guessing we have to consider the whole theory about "Human Computer Interaction" (Easy to use, etc...).

So can you be able to direct me where I can get interfaces of these applications you had mentioned (charting, care plan documentation, order entry, results reporting, admission/discharge/transfer, charge capture and or medication administration)?

Thanks,

Mat

those types of applications are "proprietary" meaning you have to have the product licensed to your institution. HIS (Hospital Information Systems) vendors do not ordinarily provide access (allow you to interface) to their products unless an institution has purchased them or that organization is in the system selection process. They are huge applications (not talking about an Access data base here) so they are also not something you can download from the Internet. I assume you do not work in a hospital or you would be able to utilize the systems at your own institution. If you are a student perhaps your SON (school of nursing) has a test enviroment that mirrors an HIS? If the above are not options for you try contacting the nursing education dept of the hospital your SON is affiliated with. Hope that helps.

Thanks for your valuable information. I am information technology student doing this course as my elective. So all this are new for me. As far as I know I don't think my school has access to these information. However I will try to enquire someone in the faculty tommorow.

Meanwhile, can you be able to do me a big favour? I am not sure whether you have access to this or not, but it would be helpful to me if you can give me a sketch of these interface in any method?

Thanks again,

Mat

maty12 I don't know if this would be enough to help you or not. Sometimes you can check the various vendor sites. Many of them have screen shots of their products if you search around enough. However, they won't show the interactions of the screen, unless you register. You will see what the screens look like from a color and layout perspective. For example if you go to http://www.health-infosys-dir.com/yphccis.asp you will find a list of vendors. Ignore any that are consultants. Like try Cerner or company like that and look around its web page. Of course, check with your instructors. This may not be sufficient enough for your project.

One way to approach this assignment would be to go to a hospital and identify yourself to a nursing supervisor; explain to them that you're doing the assignment for a class, and then perhaps ask if they can access their computer system so you can see what this assignment refers to; of course, thats if that hospital uses a computer application for the nurses; most programs to access the daily labs could be one of these interfaces and all hospitals seem to have one. I would then ask the nurse "what would u like to see change in this application to make it more user friendly to the nurses???"

Of course, i'm sure you must know nurses in your family or friends that are nurses so perhaps they can help you. :)

The funny thing is that the assignment calls to provide screenshots; to do this you would have access to the computer system at the hospital, so really, i find this assignment a bit ludicrous; it only goes to show how security is taken for granted by this instructor. Even if you had to draw it, you would still need to ask permission for somebody in that setting to let you in so you can see what it looks like.....anyway....good thing i'm not in your class, otherwise i would be protesting the assignment. :)

Thanks for your reply. I will work with this and will let you know how I go with this in the near future.
