0.45% Sodium Chloride + 2.5% dextrose 500ml solution

What situation are going to use ?

And how to determine the volume of the solution ???

Here is the scenario

Mrs. Law is a 43-year-old, overweight client. Mrs. Law told the nurse that she had right upper quadrant abdominal pain several weeks ago and nausea two days ago. She noticed that her urine had turned dark brown and her stool pale yellow yesterday. Embarrassed, she admitted having trouble with "gas". The nurse noted a yellow cast over Mrs. Law's skin and sclera, and several superficial scratches and bruises on her limbs.

Mrs. Law was diagnosed with cholelithiasis and an operation was scheduled. Mrs. Law returned to the ward from surgery. She was prescribed IV infusion ½:½ solution 500 ml Q6H.

Volume is volume. Unless you're leaving out info, the only volume I see is 500 mL.

I am asking why it is needed to use 500ml rather then other volume.
