SN Externship at Methodist

Anyone know any details about this program? Do you get paid or is it just for experience? I'm not sure how it all works.

I'm trying to figure out a way to get my foot in the door and I really want to buy a house and get out of this apartment. Just not sure if it would be a good idea or not. I need to be able to make enough to cover a mortgage and all the bills, etc but still be able to go to school without the pressure of full time school, full time work, full time mom, and all that.

I like the sound of it, tuition reimbursement and benefits and all that. Guess I'm just looking for someone that has done it to tell me what to expect if I apply and get it.

I'm starting NS in the fall, so it wont be until next year that I'm eligible, but I want to get all my eggs in one basket.

well i dont want to pass on any bad info, but it is my impression that we can work as students after the first semester. the first semster will teach us nursing fundamentals & the basics, such as taking blood pressures, giving bed baths, safe transfer techniques, etc. --- things one might do if they are a CNA. i already work at iu hospital as a tech and any of the students i have talked to work minimal hours-maybe 12-24/week- because they say school takes up your life. they make about $10/h. once the sne passes a med exam with the hospital they are called a snem (student nurse extern who can pass meds) anyway, they get a another dollar on the hour. as far as tuition reimbursement, i can only speak from my experience- i am allotted up to $2500 annually to count towards reimbursement- that is for class time only - no books, no supplies or lab fees. now, maybe this will be a different figure come august when i start the real program- i'll have to find out. anyway, i'm sure many of our questions and expectations will be cleared up for us at the orientation. (i know i cant wait!!!- does it sound stupid- i want to bring a tape recorder so i dont miss anything!!!) well i hope i helped some-- when i go to work on friday i'll ask my manager if he can give me any information.

Based on what I've heard from students who have utilized this opportunity, the best benefit is not financial. Of course they are exceedingly accommodating to student schedules, but the experience itself takes the cake. You have the opportunity to leave nursing school with some experience under your belt. The story my family member tells is teaching her classmates simple techniques that she learned from working with real nurses on the floor. You just come out of school with more confidence and experience (some externs find a post-grad job within the hospital system based on their networking) with real patients outside of the classroom/clinical environment. I for one, believe the stories and cannot wait to apply myself when I become eligible! It is not easy to find a job willing to work with my ever changing student availability, let alone an experiential job that helps prepare you for real life (including hospital administration politics) outside of the classroom.

I work at IU Hospital in a progressive care unit (PCU)- that is a "step down" unit.-- In a PCU the ratio is one nurse for every 2-3 patients. The acuity of the patients is can still be high!! I know that when I graduate I want to work either in ICU, PCU or OR at IU. I love that it is a teaching hospital so we see a lot of interesting cases.

do you feel that the next countdown has begun? - first it was waiting for the letters- now its waiting for the orientation to find out answers for all of our questions -- then the first day of class.... oh the agony!!

I know! But I'm so excited I can barely contain myself. I'm sure the excitement will quickly fade when classes begin and the stress hits. I look forward to the challenge though. I just keep thinking....it's only 2 more years until I'm a nurse!

Update: It's only ONE more year till I'm a nurse!! Applying for SNE positions now and did a search and found this old thread. My, how the time flies when your nose is buried in a stack of books for a year.

I work at Methodist as a SNE, hired last Aug. in the resource pool. I do CNA type work and sit with patients that cant be alone. The money is good. You can also bring your homework to work with you. You can also put in to work as many hours as you want to work. I enjoy it. You will be able to see what floors you would like to apply for OR not apply for. Plus Clarian will hire from within before going outside.

Thanks for the info! One of my classmates works Resource at Methodist as a SNE and she seems to enjoy it. I'm going to apply there. Congrats on finishing up!!!!
