Smoke free psych hospitals

Hi, we went smoke free about 6 years ago with very few issues. We were expecting violence to increase but that was not the case.

Can I just get some feedback if your hospital is smoke free and which state or country you are from.

Thanks

Both of the psych facilities I've worked for recently went smoke free. One was a large (200+ bed) state facility and the other is an inpatient unit in a larger medical center. I don't think we've had any issues with increased violence and most of the patients seem to get by okay with patches and gum.

I work in a county hospital psych unit. It is an acute care unit. We let our patients smoke. They have to bring their own. No sharing/donating/selling etc.

Allowing smoking is what's causing all of our problems! I wish they would stop!

Hi Neighbour ( I'm in Australia).

I work in a smoke free hospital, and have noticed no increase in aggression in the psych inpatient unit. Often it has been a good opportunity for clinicians to approach willingness to change with our clients, and then upon discharge case managers/GPs can follow up!

It's not always peachy, but for the most part it's been well tolerated.
