Sloan-Kettering advice

Published

I was hoping that anyone who works at Sloan-Kettering would have some advice for me. I'm an RN with my bsn and graduated in 2006. I didn't pass my boards the first time, then studied hard and passed in June. Now I'm looking for my first job, and Sloan-Kettering is at the top of my list by far. I gave a recruiter my resume at a job fair. The only thing is, she left me a message asking why I waited a year to get licensed as an RN. I think I'll have to tell her I didn't pass at first. Does anyone from sloan think that this will hinder me from even getting an interview? Do you have any advice as to what I can say to express that sloan kettering is my number one choice, and I'd be an asset? I just don't want them to deny me an interview altogether. Thanks so much for reading!!!

Could you tell them you waited a year because you had personal matters to attend to and you also wanted to take time to prepare for the NCLEX (like take Kaplan, etc.). Maybe you could also tell her you were taking your time in researching hospitals and decided that Sloane-Kettering was your top choice. Make sure you have some good info on Sloane-K. in case she asks what swayed you.

Hope this helps.

Tell the truth. Tell them you did not pass first time and that you became discouraged. tell them you took your time and studied hard to prepare for the nlex second time around and that you passed it. (did you only take it twice) I think honesty is the best policy. HR is propably well used to the fact that some people take the nclex more than once. I f they discover that you lied to them about the nclex they will definitely see you as a dishonest person and will not hire you now or in the future.

hey! actually, jtjames, what you said to say is very close to what I did say... I took responsibility for not being prepared to pass so I studied very hard to make sure I passed the second time...but the recruiter didn't seem to think it would go over well with whoever makes the final decisions...she said they'd "ask questions" and that there are just so many new grad applicants...it's ok, I did get a job at Bronx-Lebanon...not the same of course, but at least it's a job!

Specializes in ICU.

Hey there!! I actually work there, in Sloan-Kettering (ICU). First of all, i don't even see why it's relevant for HR to ask you why you waited a year. In my opinion, as long as you have your license, that's all that matters. I agree w/ the rest, just tell them the truth. I truly think that this won't hinder you from getting a position. Hope to see you around & Good luck w/ job hunting.
