Sleep patterns

We all know how important sleep is. What are you doing in your LTC to permit residents a good nites sleep. We cut down on dressings on the 11-7 shift, but they still do the gtube dressing and IV dressing changes. Also rarely give a 12 am med. HOwever..the am med pass which also includes accuchecks and blood draws is started at 5 am!! sometimes 4:30!! This is so the nurse can get done by 7 am.

Let me tell you...if someone came at me at 5 or 6 am and woke me up to take my blood sugar or my synthroid...I will hit them!! Sleep is sacred for me and should be for our residents.

A good nite sleep would cut down on agression and confusion during the day.

Any one have any good refrences for this?

Our residents get dried throughout the night. we have some 6am meds but there's very few meds given during 11-7. The accuchecks start on 7-3.and 11-7 doesn't get anyone up unless they want to get up. We recently got a new admit who likes to get up at 5Am. We have another rsd who likes to stay up late. She did this at home and is on her same schedule here. I like working at a place where the rsd aren't gotten up before the roosters and then sleep sitting in their chairs.
