Hi all! I recently finished my CNA, as recommended by most of my friends in nursing programs to get my CNA first, however I'm going thru a divorce and living on my own with a 2.5 year old on a CNA salary in Washington state just isn't cutting it for me. It's been my goal to pursue a career as a RN but I can't dedicate to it full time for 2 years yet. So I've been looking into the LPN program at my community college, which also feels like its going to require a lot of time. I guess I'm looking for some advice/support from other single moms that this is doable to pursue this dream of mine while working and supporting my son. How did you guys accomplish this goal?

I'm a single mom of 12 and I'm entering my senior semester of RN school. It's not easy but I'm doing it. You need faith, determination, & a strong will. You CAN do this! Much luck!!!

I will finish the LVN program in about a week! Becoming a nurse is something that I have wanted to do for a long time, but as a single Mom I never could find the right time to do it. After working as a Scrub Tech for 6 years, I finally decided to "bite the bullet" and go back to school. Without a doubt, this past year has been full of many difficulties/challenges and I have had to make many sacrifices. It is not easy and requires a lot of time and hard work. Thankfully with the support of my mom and dad and some great friends I MADE IT! Stay focused, get organized, let the house be messy and do the laundry later, etc. The small sacrifice you make now will make a huge difference for you and your child. It's just one short year and it will fly by. I can't wait to bridge over and get my RN. Good luck to you, I hope you do it!! :-))

I'm a single mom of 3 and I start LPN school on August 13th. I'm excited and nervous too wondering how I'm going to keep things running smoothly for the next 15 months. It's going to be hard financially but I've decided to only work part time while in school and just currently got a new job that is willing to work with my school schedule thank God. Stay strong and have faith, that's what's got me this far along with a lot of prayers. With God you can get through anything. :)

Thank you everyone for the encouraging words! I know this is the right path for me, I found out today I only have 2 prereqs required (difference between where I used to live and took my prereqs before and where I live now) so I've enrolled in those 2 classes, and have signed up for the mandatory info meeting to apply for the program beginning next year! Time to just dive straight in :)

Cnagrl I am in the same boat as you and every other woman on this forum. I recently became a single mother in January. I started taking my pre-reqs last year for the LPN program while I was working as a CNA at a Rehab center that was paying for me to go to school. I have 2 toddlers and everything was great at the time. I worked the 11-7 shift and went to school in the daytime on his off days. Everything went down hill in October of last year. Things went bad between me and him, I lost my job, my townhouse, my car, everything. We split in January and he left me to take care of these kids by myself. I found a home health job where I get absolutely no benefits and I am working a 24-hr live-in Thu-Sat just because it pays more. I had to move back in with my mom and use my sister's car to get around.....Talking about hitting rock bottom! But I thank God, I am still blessed! At first, I had lost all hope for school because my loans went into default, so now I have to pay for school out of my pocket. I have not been in school since last summer, but you know what? I can't go down any further, I can only go up from here. I am back in school taking one of my 4 pre-reqs. I will get the other 3 out of the way in the Spring and Summer and by this time next year, I plan to be in the program! My kids are my motivation! Never let go of your dreams, these men think that we will fail without them, we have to show them that we rise above! God bless you all!
