Simulation labs and externships

Published

Hi everyone,

I am a second semester nursing student and love it. I'm struggling with simulation labs. I know they're designed to keep us on our toes and help us develop our critical thinking skills, but I get nervous during them and question my decisions and the little bit of knowledge I do have. Lol. I feel like my nervousness hinders my ability to function optimally and it kills my confidence.

How did you overcome the simulation lab nervousness?

Also, I am starting an externship at a local hospital soon and I am so excited! I can't wait to learn so much more, and things that I haven't been exposed to during clinicals. Any advice for externships?

We were usually in groups of 4-5 for SIMS lab. Our lab instructor always told us to put our brains together to help the patient and come up with answers. She also stressed that SIMS lab is the time to make the mistakes and learn from them, so when we came across that particular scenario in clinical or as a nurse we would know how to handle it.

Being in a group, and being told it's okay to make mistakes and asks lots of questions, definitely helped ease our anxiety and nerves.
