I was reading an article in a nursing journal about racism in nursing. Apparently, there are nurses associations specifically for different racial and ethnic groups.
So, would it be a good idea for White nurses to band together in this way? Is that a taboo because it's construed as being as racist or is it just that Whites don't have the need for a group identity because of their majority status? Will that be changing as the demographics of the nation change? After all, in some areas White people are a minority.
What do you all think?
I googled the 'Black Nurses Association'. It looks like an interesting site, full of good info.
here are the bylaws of the hispanic nurses association. it says that, in order to be a voting member, one must be of hispanic ancestry. how do you feel about that?

article iii. members
section 1. voting members
membership in this association is open to licensed nurses in the united states and its jurisdictions who are of hispanic ancestry and who have paid the dues established by the board and membership.
a member in good standing is one whose current dues have been paid and who complies with provisions of amended articles of incorporation and the by-laws of the nahn, and who is not under disciplinary action.
section 2. associate members
any licensed nurse who is not of hispanic ancestry but is interested in helping to solve the problems and needs of the hispanic community and has paid the dues established by the board and membership. these individuals will be non-voting members.
Boy, no one is going to like what I have to say, but what the heck.
I for one am sick and tired of black people calling themselves "African Americans" - when the overwhelming majority are so many generations removed from their "African" roots.
My grandmother came over from Ireland, do I call myself an "Irish American"? No.
We are all just Americans. I think people of color who set themselves apart, and then complain they are apart, are ridiculous.
I am anything but racist. My ex husband was half Japanese, and my grandson whom I adore is half black. HIS FATHER is actually from Nigera, and he IS therefore an African American - even he can't tolerate that title. I love him like a son.
Slavery happened, it's a sad fact. As did the murder and persecution of the Jews during Hitlers rein. Christians used to kill each other in Gods name - these are all sad historical facts - but can we learn from them and put them where they belong and move FORWARD? I hope so.
Obama is half black the other half is white - (like my grandson) - however, he's is being called the "first African American" candidate. Why does the media have to put RACE as a part of his title??? To cause controversy where there shouldn't be any? His skin may not be white, but he has learned what all other persons of color SHOULD learn: If you want to be accepted my mainstream America, you must behave like a mainstream American. Period.
He speaks English, has an education, clawed his way up in the world, and deserves to be where he is because he EARNED it. He didn't sit back and feel as though he's was owed something because of the color of his skin.
You know the old saying, "When in Rome, do as the Romans do?" That applies here too, or at least it should. Nothing riles me up more than when a person comes into our hospital AFTER LIVING HERE 20 YEARS AND DOESN'T SPEAK ENGLISH! Then in order to protect their rights, I have to jump through hoops to find an interpreter - lest their rights be stepped on.
Enough said. I think race is an issue for those people who don't want to work for a living and make something of themselves. And that includes the "white" trash as well.
No one in the country is OWED anything. Time to FORGET the color of a persons skin. It's what's inside that counts. Time to stop "ghetto talk" and rap music where every other word is "nig*er" - I find that offensive - and I'm just your every day mixed breed American mutt - Irish, French Canadian, Sioux indian, German and Dutch - yep that's me. Pale as snow, don't tan, and proud to be AMERICAN.
OMG, did you even READ my post???I really can't stand ignorance. I CLEARLY said I didn't believe in the term 'reverse' racism. I clarified that. You chose not to read it. If you aren't familiar with that particular term then google it.
And yes, you cleary misinterpreted my post.
Why do people have to nitpick at the words of a post, instead of looking at the actual meaning of it?
I read your initial post...and just so you will know...in case I missed something I did go back and read again...your first post is exactly as I quoted...but I did find a later post where you clarified your position on reverse racism. I know the definition of reverse racism...I was just really curious about your take on it since you seemed to have such a strong opinion of not caring if white people experienced it. Your words...not my ignorance. Perhaps if you were more succinct in your initial post, you could have avoided misinterpretation and you may not have found it necessary to engage in name calling at all.

this is where it gets odd. in order to be of hispanic ancestry you must be of white ancestry. ie the spanish which is in europe.

Exactly right. Thats the message I've been trying to portray. That is why I'm against there being any kind of "special associations" catering to one type of group. They should be eliminated and put under the American Nurse Association. Should we allow immigrants? Of course. Just like White students are allowed to join historically Black schools, immigrants can join the American Nurse association. If we're all equal by the law than lets act like we're equal.

WOW! Where do I start? :chuckle You're joking right?
Actually a quarter of Black Americans live below the poverty line..http://money.cnn.com/2004/08/26/news/economy/poverty_survey/index.htm
The majority of Blacks in this country are middle class, working folks.
This corroborates what was initially posted. Or did I miss something else?

Why bother to post if it's just a dismissive put down?
