Should I stay or should I go? Not liking work

Nurses General Nursing

Hey guys! So I'll make this short and sweet. I just graduated nursing school to become an LPN, and I found a position at a local hospital, where they hired me as a "fellow" aka tech up until I take my NCLEX (which is next week). Well, I do not feel like I fit in there at all, everyone seems rude and I am not fond of the way that they handle things both policy wise, and personally. I come from another hospital system, where they did things a lot differently, but they sparingly hire LPNs. I am trying to decide if I should try to stick it out for the experience, and sign on to work as an LPN, or should I quit and look elsewhere.

Do all new nurses feel stressed and unsure?

Why did you leave the first system to start out with?

Things are going to be different every time you go somewhere new. I doubt that everyone is rude ...maybe you need to be a little more open-minded? What policies are you finding difficult?

I can't see that it would hurt to look around and see what offers you get if you are truly miserable, but you should do it before you start your actual nursing position if that's what you want to do.

I left because I didn't want to work while I was going to nursing school. I left on a good note, but they didn't have any open positions for LPN positions when I was looking.

I honestly think its just the unit that I am on.. It seems that there is no teamwork going on, and I dont like the way some talk to their patients. I see the nurses that I dont want to become, and so far, I havent found any that I do want to become. I am not being closed minded, I have been there since the beginning of July... Im just looking to hear peoples opinions.

Hi Marrismarie, first off, congrats on completing your LPN and moving on to the next chapter of your career. Best of luck with the NCLEX. In your situation, the firs thing I would say is yes - all nurses feel stressed and unsure. I think it takes a few months to get a real feel of a unit and an environment. The staff may still be unsure about you as well during this time, and it can take time to gel. However, if you already know deep down that this is not a fit - there is nothing wrong with exploring other options. I do recommend making sure you have SOMETHING else lined up before leaving this position. I'm not sure what the LPN market is like where you are or what your career aspirations include, but good LPN spots not in LTC can be hard to come by - and if this is a unit that offers good exposure and experience, it may be worth it to stick it out. Just some things to consider, but definitely make sure you have something else - if you do decide to quit. Best of luck to you!
