Should I be applying to jobs already?

So, I am nearly finished with my 3rd semester of a 2 year ADN program, and it's looking good that I'm going to graduate on time(woo-hoo!) I keep hearing that the job market is getting tighter. I am employed currently at a hospital, but really don't like the environment, and would only consider staying on there as an RN as a last resort. My dream job would actually be at the VA, which is currently advertising some perfect sounding openings (in regards to being on the type floor I would want to be on, and shifts I want). Should I get in touch with their nurse recruiter, still being ~6 months out from graduating, and probably another 1-2 months from licensing? Should I wait until next semester? Anyone else wondering the same things? If you're already applying, let me know what response you're getting! Any advice would be great.

What can you lose by calling them? Maybe you can get your dream job?!?!

I applied in my final semester and was hired before graduation. It's not too soon to scope out the possibilities.

If your thinking of the VA I know of a fellow student who graduated in May...applied in February and it was a 6 month process(july) till he started working there. I say apply! He also recommended applying in person at their HR thought it would move the process along quicker. Good Luck!

ps. Started my own job search in August, I graduate in December. Had job offers by October 1st and accepted a position the middle of October. I know the local BIG TIME hospital(university affiliated)advertises that they accept applications up to 12 months from your graduation date. Heck, contact wherever you want to work and see what they say. Worse case scenario they tell you to apply in January, February whatever instead...but then you'll know for sure! GOOD LUCK!!
