Shadowing a midwife

Hey everyone!

I'm an aspiring CNM, will be starting nursing school in September!! I'm so excited?

Anyway, do any of you know how I can get to shadow a CM/CNM? Do I call a birth center/hospital or is it completely unacceptable? I live in New Jersey by the way.

Thank you!

I don't have an answer but congratulations on your new adventure!

I'd start with the NJ ACNM affiliate.

New Jersey Midwife - Midwives are an integral and valuable resource in every community.

See if you can come to one of their meetings, that's a good way to meet midwives when they're not working, and you'll get a feel for them, and maybe be brave enough to ask if you can shadow them. There's no harm in asking! There will be some midwives more receptive to this than others -but there are midwives want to share midwifery and who would love to have a shadow for a day.

I am in Washington State so it may be different. I asked one of the midwives that I work with if she would mind if I shadowed her. Then I had to fill out paperwork from my job that was a release from my job that was the same that a volunteer or student would sign. I would call to a clinic or birth center and ask. They have been through the process. All of the ones at the hospital that I work at are super supportive. Good luck.
