Sequoia/San Francisco State Fall 2013 BSN applicants

U.S.A. California

Published

Hello!

I wanted to start a forum for applicants that are applying specifically to the Sequoia/SFSU BSN program for Fall 2013. I wanted to invite students who are currently applying, already in the program,or have graduated from the Sequoia program to offer advice to all of us hopefuls out there.

This is my second year applying to the Sequoia program. Last year I got into the program :), but I did not realize I did not have a random 3 unit transcript in on time, so the head of the program told me I couldn't be accepted in...bummer :(. I have applied again for the Fall 2013 program and can't wait to find out the results in March. Looking forward to hearing from everyone! Good luck!

Anyone know how to or interested in making a Facebook group for our Sequoia/SFSU class? let me know- i think you have to have at least 2 people to create the group.

That is a great idea!

I would love to join - or if you want start - a Facebook group for our cohort.

I can setup the Facebook page this afternoon and share the link on this thread.

I am so looking forward to meeting all of you! ?

Hi Everyone,

So, I have just created a Facebook group for our class.

Look for SFSU/Sequoia Nursing - Cohort 10. :)

If you have been admitted and are intending to enroll for this coming fall please join, so we can keep the conversation going!

Hi all,

I am one of the applicants who got into both SMU ABSN and Sequoia BSN programs. I am now weighing both and I am in a situation to choose one. Any pointers or tips will help me. Does anyone know if there is a guaranteed job in Sequoia Hospital if you do Sequoia program, because we signed a contract saying that we, applicants will work in Sequoia Hospital for 2 years after graduation?

Thanks in advance,

Sue

At the info session I attended the director said Sequoia hired 17 of their grads last year, but some years they only hire a few. I think it's based on whatever Sequoia's needs are at the time. So there are no guarantees, but given the new grad market around here it's nice to have even the possibility of a job at graduation.

Congrats on getting in to both programs! That's a tough decision.

Hi Space Monster,

17 jobs is not bad. It is good news. I thought SMU was the best choice. But now Sequoia BSN in Canada College sounds way too good to be true. Get to finish BSN degree in 4 semesters, costs only 20K all together for 4 semesters, and there might be a job availability. Am I wrong or missing something here? I want to make sure that I got everything straight with Sequoia program before saying no to SMU ABSN program that will be done in a year, but will cost me around $65K.

Thanks,

Sue

Space Monster,

BTW., when was this info. session that you attended to? Do you mind sharing vital information that you got in the meeting?

Thanks in advance,

Sue

Hi Bluejemm,

I searched for the group and could not find it. How can I join?

Thanks in advance,

Hi Sue,

Make sure you are searching for the group using the general Facebook search bar and not within theS.F. State groups page.

Just type in (or cut and past) "SFSU/Sequoia Nursing - Cohort 10" in the search bar at the top of your Facebook page and our group should be the only one that pops up.

You're Welcome! ;-)

I can't seem to find the Facebook page either :( I copied and pasted it and nothing showed up.

The info session was in late March. It was primarily for folks who want to apply this fall for the cohort starting in fall 2014. A lot of the info was related to the application process (e.g., you can take the TEAS as many times as you wish; you can check to see whether your prerequisites will transfer on assist.org).

Don't quote me on any of this since I may have misheard, but I can give you some info from my notes. They said that have received funding for 3 more years of incoming classes (starting with the fall 2013 class), but they have had to reduce the class size to 32 (down from 40). They have just changed the curriculum to be competency-based instead of content-based, and yes, there will be 4 semesters instead of 5. At the time of this session, they weren't sure whether they would hold classes over the summer, though, so they said the program still could last 5 semesters (with the summer off). You could try to call or email them to see if they have made a decision about this.

And yes, I'm pretty sure they said Sequoia hired 17 people last year, but they also said that the number can vary widely from year to year. So unfortunately there are no guarantees -- but having a chance at a job is a great thing!

If you have other questions you can PM me with your email address and I will try to answer them. If I'm lucky enough to get in to both programs, I will face the same choice as you one day. Not an easy one! Good luck with your decision.

Hi Sudhasaravan & Melygina,

If you want you can send me a PM and I will reply back to you with a link to the page. I would PM you myself, but since I'm a new member to allnurses I don't have access to the private message function right now.

The only reason (that I can think of) for not finding the Cohort 10 group page is that you’re searching for the group using a search engine like Google, since you don’t have a Facebook account. Sadly one of the drawbacks with a Facebook group is that everyone must have their own Facebook account to gain access to a Facebook group page. So if this is the case and you want to join, just set-up a basic Facebook account and then search for the group again within Facebook and you should find it.

I hope this helps.

Bluejemm
