Published

Anyone else applying to Sentara's program to start Jan 2020? I'm in the process of preparing for the TEAS right now. I can't wait till have a score to work with.

Anyone have an insight to the admissions process? Or any info on how hard the program is once your in?

Hey there, current Sentara BSN student, just finished my first semester!

AMA about the admissions process or the program in general, I'll be happy to answer what I can!

Thank you!

I'm trying to get some info on what the typical class week consists of.

How many hours are you in class? Is it typical to be working while in school or is that unusual? Do you feel like the work load is reasonable if you are committed to preparing properly?

How are you liking the program thus far?

And as far as admission goes, is it true that its just prereq gpa + teas score?

No problem!

This semester that just finished, we were in class 2x a week for 3-5 hours and then had 1 clinical day which is 8.5 hours (6:45-3:15). I worked full time during this, it is doable! So my week usually looked like this: Monday class 8-1:30, work till 6. Tuesday work 9-5. Wednesday class from 9-12, work 1-6. Thursday clinical. Friday work 9-5.

Many people had jobs and other commitment's, it's definitely achievable if you set your mind to it and prioritize.

I'm really enjoying the program so far but there are a lot of things that can be improved - for example, the class load is already very hefty and this entire semester we were getting our lecture videos like a day before class so we did not have nearly enough time to prep prior to class. There was also a lot of conflicting teachings from different instructors which caused a lot of "self-teaching" during the semester for one of our classes.

As for admissions - yes it is GPA and TEAS only, so study hard for that TEAS! It's not a difficult test. I scored a 100 on the math portion and I am terrible at math (or so I thought). I had 6 years of experience in the medical field and there was no where on the application to put that.

Hope this helps!

It does a lot thanks so much! I score a 92 on the TEAS with a 4.0 prereq gpa, so I'm optimistic. Just trying to o my research and make sure the program is going to work for me.

Hope you have something fun planned for your summer break ?

Oh you're bound to get in with those stats! I was initially waitlisted and had a lower GPA, but was happy when they called! I can tell you that this program exceeds many other programs in the area, as it is a BSN program in 2.5 years, and our NCLEX pass rate is 100%. You will also get to work with the registration staff in making sure the schedule works for you, and Sentara students do take priority over other students / programs when it comes to clinical and job placement. Keep that in mind but also ask around! This may work great for me but terrible for others.

Well thank you for the vote of confidence.

Yeah, their student success rates and hospital placements are major sells for me. I'm glad to here that they are flexible with schedules. I'm planning on trying to work part time while in the program.

One more question for you, is there anything you wished you had reviewed or really had down from the prereqs before you started? I took A&P in 2016 so its been a minute, I did a lot of review for the TEAS. Or should I just take it easy so I'm ready to roll come January?

The pre-req's honestly made me nervous because I had a C in chemistry, and I took A/P in 2013!! So I feel you on that. I really don't think it's going to keep you behind. Most of the first semester does not revolve around your pre-reqs, and if you have a basic understanding of A/P you will do just fine! I'd say take it easy! I psyched myself out and turns out I didn't need to.

That's reassuring. Thanks so much for answering my questions. I'm so excited at the prospect of going back to school, but a little nervous about getting back into the swing of things.

Hey! Just finished all requirements for the application (BSN 2020). Hoping to get good news at the end of the month ?wondering how many others out there have applied?!?

Hey There! Good Luck too you! Only 2 more weeks until we get our decisions emails. :)

I don't know if you went to any of their info sessions or talked to the recruiters. When i went they said for the BSN program they generally receive 300 applications for the 100 spots (so about 33% initial acceptance). He said that they generally wait list about 50 students. The first 15 on the wait list are very likely to be offered a seat as people decline theirs. The middle bit have a decent shot, and like 35-50 are unlikely to be offered a seat. So actual admission to the program is probably between 40% an 50%.

Are you applying to any other programs in the area? I'll be looking at ODU for Fall 2020 if I'm not successfully in gaining admission to Sentara.
