Seminole State College ASN questions

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hi, I am considering getting an ASN and starting a career in nursing, I am doing this a little bit later in life and I already have an AA but I unfortunately have a low GPA. I am trying to get some info on how competitive Seminole state college is. I also read on some older threads that they are "2 years behind"... Is this true? Something along the lines of if you finished your last prereq two years ago it was your chance to get in. That is very discouraging to hear, although I do suppose it would give me time to get my GPA up. Also, do they consider only your prereq GPA or your cumulative GPA or both? I'm sure I could come up with more questions, but I'll just start with these. Also, if I posted this in the wrong area, I apologize...

Hi -

I'm not sure if you've already gotten your answers to this since it was posted in January, but thought I'd add a comment just in case. For the GPA, they first look your prerequisite courses only (Biology, Psych, Anat & Phys I & II, Algebra, Microbio, etc.) and that's where the GPA eligibility comes into play. In my case, this is the reason why I applied to Seminole. Due to some silly mistakes as an 18-year old (a decade ago), my overall GPA wasn't high enough to qualify for most Nursing programs, but my prerequisite GPA (which is from more recent classes) was just over 3.0, and this was why I was thankful that Seminole uses that as their qualifier. They also take into account your TEAS score, which I believe also helped my case. My GPA was so-so but my TEAS score was excellent, so if your GPA isn't as competitive I highly suggest retaking the TEAS (3 times in 1 year is the max) until you get a score that will (hopefully) make up for it.

Hope this helped! I recently got my acceptance letter for their ASN program to begin in January and was very convinced that because of my overall GPA I wouldn't stand a chance. Make sure you get a TEAS score that they can't ignore and it'll help tremendously!
