Hello all,
First off just let me say how much respect I have for all of the hospice nurses and aides out there. I think what you all do is absolutely wonderful.
Now for my questions. I am a new CNA, well I worked on A med-surg floor for a while, but I was really disrespected and it just wasnt worth it for the amount of work and effort I put in. I tried really hard, and I did really well, but my co-workers were just plain RUDE, and not helpful, I basically never had a preceptor, and they even made racist comments to my face about me. Anyways, I have an oppurtunity to work PRN at a hospice facility, and while I think hospice is a great thing, I am worried I won't be able to handle it. My desired posistion after I graduate nursing school is school nursing, but I do want to try everything. Some people say that they like hospice because it makes them feel like they helped someone as they are going through something very hard, and that they helped them find peace in their final days. Have any of you ever cried at work accidently, or became depressed because or work? How do you cope?
I think I can handle it, but I just really don't know what to expect at all. When my grandmother was in hospice, it actually was not sad at all because of the great care the nurses gave her, and the comfort they have our family. There was a very peaceful feel about the faclity.
Anyways, if anyone has any advice or thoughts I will appreciate it greatly!!
:)
