Seeking nurse mentor: ICU new grad

Published

Specializes in ICU.

Hey everyone! I'm a new grad in the ICU and recently off orientation. I would love to connect with some experienced nurses I can talk to about work and get advice when needed about patient care or concepts that I'm not familiar with. I am really trying to build my critical thinking and foundation.

Specializes in Medical-Surgical ICU.

Hi Gigi! What helped me in my practice was just showing up to work everyday and always ask "why" we are performing these interventions. Reading Barton's CCRN and taking the certification exam really helped tremendously with my critical thinking skills!  Good luck, the ICU is a great place to work. Always something new and challenging. I will admit that I didn't start liking being a nurse until I was around 1 year in, but it gets better everyday.

Specializes in New Critical care NP, Critical care, Med-surg, LTC.

Hi Gigi, This is a great place to come for advice and support. There's the ICU page, but it doesn't get as much traffic as this one. There are also some critical care facebook pages that get decent amounts of traffic. There are many great resources out there on social media, YouTube, etc. Although as you mentioned, having someone to turn to can also help greatly. You should feel free to post here whenever, people are usually pretty good about responding with feedback and we have some great ICU trained RNs and NPs that are willing to help out and have extensive experience and knowledge. Good luck, ICU is a great career choice!
