In 1844, The University of Mississippi (Ole Miss), a public institution, was founded. The health sciences campus of the University of Mississippi is located at the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) in Jackson.

In 1948, the University of Mississippi School of Nursing was founded as Mississippi's first nursing school. In 1956, the Oxford campus' nursing department moved to UMMC.

Undergraduate


Traditional BSN

The Traditional BSN program is completed in two years after two years of prerequisites are completed. Course requirements are equal to 62 credit hours and must be completed before entering the nursing program.

There is an early-entry program available and is designed to give eligible students a chance to reserve a spot in a competitive program; either the Traditional BSN program, the RN-MSN program or the DNP program.

Graduates are awarded a BSN and are eligible to take the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN) and seek RN licensure in his/her state.

Admission (not all inclusive)

  • Minimum ACT score of 21
  • Minimum cumulative undergraduate GPA of 2.5
  • Completion of all prerequisite courses from an accredited college or university, minimum 'C' grade
  • Admission requirements for Early-Entry are separate from the Traditional BSN program
  • If an applicant has been dismissed from any nursing program, one year must pass from date of dismissal to date of eligibility into any UMMC School of Nursing program

Accelerated BSN

The Accelerated BSN program is available to students who hold a bachelor's degree in another field. This program is 12 months in length and is has a continuous, no break, curriculum that is three-semesters long. Prerequisite coursework includes 62 hours of prerequisites.

After completing the program, students are awarded a BSN and are eligible to take the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX). Students who hold BSN degrees are eligible to enter into the graduate study at the master's-degree level.

Jackson Campus Admission Criteria (not all inclusive)

  • Baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution
  • Minimum cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.0
  • Minimum ACT score of 21
  • Completion of all prerequisite courses from an accredited college or university with minimum 'C' grade
  • If an applicant has been dismissed from any nursing program, one year must pass from date of dismissal to date of eligibility into any UMMC School of Nursing program

Oxford Campus Admission Criteria (not all inclusive)

  • Currently working toward a University of Mississippi graduate or undergraduate degree and hold the degree by program entry in August
  • Graduated from the University of Mississippi within the past two years
  • Hold a University of Mississippi degree that is more than two years old but currently enrolled in prerequisite coursework at the University of Mississippi
  • Hold a non-UM degree but currently enrolled in prerequisite coursework at the University of Mississippi and have completed a minimum of 31 hours of coursework at Ole Miss before the program start date in August

  • Associate degree or diploma in nursing from ACEN or CCNE accredited institution
  • Minimum cumulative undergraduate GPA of 2.5
  • Completion of all prerequisite courses from an accredited college or university with minimum 'C' grade
  • Current unrestricted RN license to practice in the U.S. and eligibility for licensure in Mississippi
  • If an applicant has been dismissed from any nursing program, one year must pass from date of dismissal to date of eligibility into any UMMC School of Nursing program

RN to MSN

There are six options for the RN-MSN program.

  • Associate degree or diploma in nursing from an ACEN or CCNE accredited institution
  • Minimum cumulative 3.0 GPA (undergraduate and graduate)
  • Prerequisite courses with a minimum 'C' grade
  • Satisfactory score on the GRE, including a score of 3.5 or higher on the analytical section
  • Students already holding a graduate degree do not need to provide GRE scores
  • Current unrestricted RN license to practice in the U.S. and eligibility for licensure in Mississippi
  • 1 year clinical RN experience for all NP tracks; only critical care experience is acceptable for Acute Care Adult-Gerontology Nurse Practitioner applicants
  • If an applicant has been dismissed from any nursing program, one year must pass from date of dismissal to date of eligibility into any UMMC School of Nursing program
  • Admission requirements for the RN-MSN Early-Entry program are separate from the RN-MSN program

MSN and Post-Master's Certificate

The GRE is required for Master's programs as well as a GPA of 3.0 or better.

  • BSN from ACEN or CCNE accredited nursing program
  • Post-master's applicants: BSN and a Master's degree in nursing or related field; in the absence of a BSN degree, a master's degree in nursing is required
  • Minimum cumulative GPA (undergraduate and graduate) of 3.0
  • Undergraduate or graduate-level statistics course
  • Satisfactory score on the GRE, including a score of 3.5 or higher on the analytical section
  • Students already holding a graduate degree do not need to provide GRE scores; however, students who do not hold a previous graduate degree will need to provide the Registrar's office with an official copy of test results
  • At least 1 year of clinical experience as an RN is required for all nurse practitioner tracks prior to beginning the program. For the Acute Care Adult-Gerontology Nurse Practitioner track, the one year of clinical experience must be in a critical care/ED setting
  • Current unrestricted licensure (RN) to practice in the U.S. and eligibility for licensure in Mississippi and/or privilege to practice in a state in which the student will have clinical practice
  • If an applicant has been dismissed from any nursing program, one year must pass from date of dismissal to date of eligibility into any UMMC School of Nursing program

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP)

Post-Baccalaureate - Students are able to bypass the MSN degree to receive the DNP degree.

There are five post-baccalaureate degree program tracks:

  • Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner
  • Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner
  • Family Nurse Practitioner
  • Nursing and Health Care Administrator
  • Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse Practitioner

Post-Master's - Those who hold a master's degree and wish to obtain the highest level of degree practice for an RN, the Doctor of Nursing Practice program at the University of Mississippi School of Nursing is the right choice for you.

Post-Master's early-entry - The early-entry option for the DNP degree is for those who are currently working on their MSN degree. This program allows the MSN student to continue their degree while allowing MSN students from the University of Mississippi and Alcorn State University to reserve a spot in the competitive DNP program and complete their master's degree simultaneously.

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

Post-Baccalaureate - This program allows students to bypass the master's degree and obtain a PhD in Nursing.

Post-Master's - This option is for BSN prepared RNs who hold a BSN and a graduate degree in nursing or a related field.

Jackson

All of the School of Nursing's undergraduate and graduate programs and tracks are offered on Jackson campus.

Oxford

The Accelerated BSN program is offered and accessible from Oxford. The Freshman Early-Entry (FEE) program for the Traditional BSN program is also offered at the Oxford campus.

The University of Mississippi Medical Center is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC).

The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) accredited the educational programs at the University of Mississippi School of Nursing.
