The University of Minnesota School of Nursing (UMN) was established in 1909, becoming the first continuously operating nursing program on a university campus.
Undergraduate
Bachelor of Science (BSN)
The Freshman Nursing Guaranteed Program is a no-wait program for students who are interested in attending the School of Nursing in high school. The student must apply during high school, after the freshman year. The length of the program is four years, including one year of prerequisite courses and three years of nursing courses.
The program is full-time during fall and Spring semesters, but the students have the Summer off. Weekend requirements for clinicals and coursework are Monday through Friday, during the day, leaving nights and weekends open. The Twin Cities and Rochester are the homes to the program.
Graduate
Master of Science (MN)
The MN program is a full-time program for those who already hold a baccalaureate degree in a non-nursing field. This intensive 16-month program includes the requirements of a BSN plus additional graduate courses.
After successfully completing the program, students are prepared and eligible to take the RN NCLEX. After graduation, students will have 18 credits to apply toward the DNP. Graduates are also eligible for certification in public health nursing in Minnesota.
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP)
Post-Baccalaureate DNP
The Post-Baccalaureate DNP is for RNs who have an entry level degree in nursing such as a BSN or professional master's entry-level nursing degree. Compilation of the program is three years of full-time study and requires application to one of the 13 DNP specialties.
Post-Master's DNP
Nurses who hold an MSN in a nursing specialty from a fully accredited institution are eligible for the Post-Master's DNP and can be completed in three semesters of full-time study. The program is delivered almost entirely online with an on-campus requirement for students once each semester for a four-day session.

Nurse Midwifery
The program is a 3-year, full-time program. Clinical hours include approximately 1,000 hours at clinical sites arranged by the school.
After completion of the midwifery course of study, graduates are eligible to sit for the American Midwifery Certification Board (AMCB) national certification examination.
Nurse Informatics
This full-time program requires 3-years, online except as noted below.
On campus requirements: Each semester for a 4-day session (Tuesday–Friday) that includes: core courses, enhancement programming, specialty courses and advisor meetings. Practicum site requirements include 1,000 hours at sites arranged by the school.
Graduates are eligible to sit for the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) certification examination in Informatics Nursing.
Nurse Anesthesia
The program length is a 3-year, full-time program.
On campus requirements: 1–2 days each week for coursework; each semester a 4-day session (Tuesday–Friday) that includes: core courses, enhancement programming, specialty courses, advisor meetings.
Clinical sites requirements: Complete approximately 3,500 hours at clinical sites arranged by the school.
The DNP requirements as well as the requirements to take the National Certification Exam for nurse anesthetists are completed within the program. The three-year (9 semesters) DNP curriculum includes anesthesia didactic coursework, anesthesia clinical experiences, and DNP coursework.
Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
The PhD curriculum is an in-classroom/person-to-person delivery. Typical completion of the program is 5 years. Students must come into the program with a baccalaureate or master's degree.
