Located in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, Southeast Missouri State University was founded in 1873 as training grounds for elementary and high school teachers, and was referred to as a "teachers' college.”
Southeast Missouri University has over the years emerged, adding academic programs, growing its student body, and changing the way it offers education. Regional campuses in Missouri's Bootheel were the first to do this, followed by Southeast Online. Southeast Missouri State University's Department of Nursing has been training nurses since 1958. The Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) program in nursing was the first to be provided in the southern part of Missouri.

The university was the first in the southern part of Missouri to offer a Nursing (MSN) degree, which gave students access to the most advanced simulation, skills, and assessment labs.
NCLEX-RN and ANCC Pass Rates
Graduates of Southeast's BSN program proved to be exceptionally competent in the 2021–2022 academic year, as evidenced by their outstanding 93% first-time pass rate on the NCLEX–RN exam. This astounding figure demonstrates the value of demanding coursework and the excellent instruction and preparation students get, guaranteeing they are prepared to succeed in their nursing careers.
Over the previous five years, students who have completed the MSN program and taken the ANCC Family Nurse Practitioner board certification exam have passed with an astounding 100% pass rate.
