Mount Mercy University was founded in 1928 by the Sisters of Mercy; the institution began as a two-year college for women and transitioned to a four-year institution in 1957. It became co-educational in 1969 and emphasized professional development alongside a strong liberal arts focus. The university's Adult Accelerated program, which was initiated in 1997, addressed the needs of working adults. On August 23, 2010, the institution was re-designated as a university, marking a new chapter in its history. The Martins-Herold College of Nursing and Health is renowned for being one of the longest-established and most-recognized baccalaureate nursing programs in Iowa.
