In 1949, Los Angeles Harbor College (LAHC) was founded. It is a public community college.

Since 1963, the Associate Degree Registered Nursing (ADN) program has been successfully educating and preparing students to become Registered Nurses.

The program, after completing the prerequisite courses, is four semesters in length. The program integrates theoretical instruction in the classroom with small group discussions and clinical experiences in hospitals, home health care agencies, and other settings in the community. Simulation is offered for practicing of clinical and nursing skills.

Graduates of the nursing program receive an Associate of Science Degree, Professional Nursing, and are qualified to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX).

Routes for the ADN RN Program

Route 1 Generic

This route is the typical route for the entry level college student. The student will complete prerequisites, then the nursing core courses. Completion of the program will earn the student an Associate of Science Degree in Nursing, Professional. To enter the program, applicants must complete the established admission requirements.

Route 2

This program route is designed for students with verified previous healthcare experience. Prior to enrollment, all transfer courses must be verified with official transcripts. The student must be in progress with classes in the first semester to establish eligibility to take challenge examinations. The maximum number is 15 units for which a student may petition for credit by examination at the college.

Route 3 LVN 30-Unit Option

This route is for applicants who hold a current California Vocational Nursing (LVN) license. After completion of this 30-unit option, graduates are eligible to sit for the NCLEX-RN examination for licensure as a Registered Nurse.

NOTE: Completion of this option does not meet the requirements for awarding the Associate of Science Degree in Nursing, Professional. Students completing this option will not be a graduate of LAHC and cannot receive the program's nursing pin. Also, several states do not recognize persons completing this option as being a Registered Nurse even though they may have successfully completed the NCLEX-RN examination.

Route 4 LVN to RN Career Ladder Option

This route gives the LVN the opportunity to receive an ADN Degree, which qualifies the graduate to be eligible to take the NCLEX-RN exam. Applicants should hold an LVN with a current California license to enter the generic program at an advanced level after completing the required program prerequisites and the transition semester courses. Before graduation, the general education co-requisites must be completed. Applicants must achieve the required cut score on the standardized admission test.

Challenge/Advanced Placement Military-trained Health Care Personnel

Individuals who have documented military education and experience in health care occupations may be eligible for advanced placement into the 2nd semester of the nursing program. Examples of military health care experience include Army Healthcare Specialist or Air Force Independent Duty Medical Technician. The veteran must have been discharged under "honorable" conditions.

Documentation of education and clinical experience for military health care occupations must demonstrate satisfactory completion of education and experience. Official transcript(s) and documentation of experience (on official letterhead) must be submitted.

Applicants must meet all general entrance requirements of the Associate Degree Nursing program, including completion of designated prerequisites and achievement of required cut score on nursing readiness entrance examination.

Military-Trained Health Care Personnel Admission Requirements (not all inclusive)

• Nursing readiness entrance examination
• Admission Committee will determine if the candidate meets the military education and experience requirements for challenge to advanced placement
• Course syllabus will be available to the student once challenge confirmation is made
• Student must pass the examination(s) with a score of 75% or better; clinical component evaluation will be arranged by the instructor

Accreditation and Approval

The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) accredited the Los Angeles Harbor College Associate Degree Nursing Program.

Los Angeles Harbor College is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges.

The California Board of Registered Nursing approved the Los Angeles Harbor College Associate Degree Nursing Program.
