Hampton University was Founded in 1868 and was formerly known as Hampton Agricultural and Industrial School. The institution is a private, historically black, research university in Hampton, Virginia. The university was established by Black and White leaders of the American Missionary Association after the American Civil War to provide education to the freedmen. Hampton University is home to 16 research centers, including the Hampton University Proton Therapy Institute, the largest free-standing facility of its kind in the world.
