Founded in 1866 by Union Army veteran Conrad G. Swensburg, Davenport University began as the Grand Rapids Business College with just sixteen students, focusing on office skills like bookkeeping and business law. Although it nearly closed in 1910, Michael E. Davenport's intervention revitalized the college, which was later renamed in his honor. Accredited by the Higher Learning Commission in 1976, Davenport University expanded rapidly. It's main campus, named after W.A. Lettinga, now serves as a central hub for student organizations, residence halls, and athletic programs, reflecting its growth from a small business school into a multi-campus private university serving students across Michigan and online.
