Coppin State University (CSU) was founded in 1900 and is a public institution. The Helene Fuld School of Nursing Graduate Program began in Fall 1999.

Undergraduate


Bachelor of Science in Nursing (Traditional BSN)

The traditional BSN program is designed for the student (usually coming from high school) that is interested in becoming a Registered Nurse.

Admission Requirements (not all inclusive)

  • Official Transcripts from each college attended prior to CSU indicating successful completion of Prerequisite and General Education Requirements (GERs) courses
  • Three (3) Letters of Recommendation
  • Official competitive scores from the HESI A2 entrance examination
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 for the Traditional BSN plan of study

Bachelor of Science in Nursing (Accelerated Second Degree)

The Accelerated Second Degree Bachelor of Science in Nursing program is designed for students who already hold a bachelor's degree in another field and are interested in becoming nurses.

Admission Requirements (not all inclusive)

  • Official Transcripts from each college attended prior to CSU indicating successful completion of Prerequisite and General Education Requirements (GERs) courses
  • Three (3) Letters of Recommendation
  • Official competitive scores from the HESI A2 entrance examination
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.8 on 4.0 scale for the Accelerated Second Degree BSN plan of study
  • Essay of Goals and Objectives
  • Brief summary of significant work experience, progressing from high school to college to the current time period
  • Interview

Bachelor of Science in Nursing (RN to BSN)

The RN to BSN program is designed for nurses who already hold a degree in nursing (associates or diploma), have passed the NCLEX exam, and practice as an RN.

Admission Requirements (not all inclusive)

  • Official Transcripts from each college attended prior to CSU indicating successful completion of Prerequisite and General Education Requirements (GERs) courses
  • Three (3) Letters of Recommendation
  • RN to BSN students are NOT REQUIRED to take the HESI A2 exam
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 on 4.0 scale for the RN to BSN plan of study
  • Active unencumbered RN License in the state of Maryland or a participating state in the Nurse Multistate Licensure Compact

Graduate


Master of Science in Nursing (MSN)

The Master of Science degree in nursing is for nurses who want to advance themselves in their field and specialize in a specific area of expertise.

Admission Requirements (not all inclusive)

  • Baccalaureate degree in Nursing
  • Satisfactory completion of a course in elementary statistics
  • Undergraduate cGPA of 3.0; if cGPA is below 3.0, provisional acceptance will be considered
  • Current licensure for the practice of nursing in at least one state or in a foreign country; for some courses, a U.S. license is required
  • Three (3) professional recommendations
  • Personal interview

The master's program consists of forty-eight to fifty-one (48-51) credits and are required to earn a Master's Degree in Nursing.

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP)

The Doctor of Nursing Practice program is designed for nurses who want to take their degree to the highest level as a nurse. Students can specialize their DNP work as a nurse practitioner, clinical nurse specialist, nursing administration or health informatics. The classes begin in the fall and are presented in a hybrid and online format with executive-format course sessions (offered on Fridays and Saturdays). Students can register full time, which consists of 3 courses a semester or part time as 2 courses a semester. There is a 30-hour minimum number of practice hours. Over 700 hours are transferable per the students' MSN degree. The DNP project focuses on demonstrating the ability to complete outcome-oriented research which directly impacts clinical practice.

Admission Requirements (not all inclusive)

  • Master's degree in Nursing from a program accredited by the ACEN or CCNE
  • Minimum GPA of 3.25 in a master's degree program in nursing
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience as an Advanced Practice Nurse; examples include but are not limited to nurse practitioner or clinical nurse specialist or indirect care specialty such as nursing administration or health informatics
  • Official transcripts from undergraduate and graduate programs
  • Unencumbered Registered Nurse licensure in Maryland
  • National Certification in your specialty area
  • Three professional letters of reference
  • Resume or Curriculum Vitae
  • Essay identifying goals, objectives, and primary area of interest in pursuit of the DNP
  • Interview with Graduate faculty
  • Writing sample
  • Evidence of research activity

Post-Master's Certification in Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP)

As a post-master's student, a total of thirty-one (31) credits will be required to earn a certificate in the FNP program.

Approval and Accreditation

The Maryland Board of Nursing approved the Nursing program.

CSU is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE).

The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) accredited the baccalaureate degree in nursing and master's degree in nursing programs at Coppin State University.
