Undergraduate

Pre-Nursing Bachelor of Science Nursing

Students who are interested in becoming nurses enter the nursing program as a pre-nursing major.

Application Requirements (not all inclusive)

  • Grade of C (2.00) or above in all pre-nursing courses
  • Cumulative college GPA of 3.0 or above in order for nursing application to be considered
  • Pre-nursing courses may be taken at Boise State; eligible courses may be transferred to Boise State; most pre-nursing courses must be completed before applying

2nd Bachelor's Degree

Students who already hold a bachelor's degree in a non-nursing field have the option to apply and complete another bachelor's degree in nursing. Additional prerequisite nursing courses may be required before applying to the nursing program. The Kaplan Nursing Admission Exam is required to apply to the nursing program for applicants applying August 1 - September 15, 2018 for admission to the Spring 2019 cohort.

Online RN-BS

The RN who holds an associate's degree or nursing diploma may apply to the RN-BS program.

Students, on average, complete the program within 18 months. Students have the option to go at a slower pace.

There is a 3-credit statistics undergraduate program course that must be completed before admission into the program. No other prerequisite programs are required.

Students who apply for the program must hold an RN license though students who are enrolled in an associate's degree program can take RN-BSN pre-licensure courses to work on the bachelor's degree while staying enrolled in the ADN program.

Graduate

Adult Gerontology Nurse Practitioner Master of Nursing (AGNP)

Courses are taught mostly online combined with three on-campus Summer intensives (7-10 days) and four clinical rotations. 

Preceptor Placement

The university will work with the student to identify preceptors in his or her own community through the full-time clinical placement coordinator.

Residency Requirement

The AGNP is available to nurses practicing in Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Texas, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming.

Acute Care and Primary Care Specializations

AGNP students may specialize in acute care or primary care in preparation for AGACNP or ACNPC-AG board certification. 

Acute Care

Applicants to the Acute Care specialization must have one year of direct patient care experience in an ICU/CCU, Emergency Room or similar critical care environment/department with the patient population of interest (adult/gerontology).

Primary Care

Students who have a minimum of one year work experience as an RN providing direct patient care to the adult population may apply.

Application Requirements (not all inclusive)

In addition to the direct care experience listed above, all applicants must possess the following:

  • Baccalaureate degree in nursing from CCNE or ACEN accredited nursing program
  • Undergraduate GPA of 3.0
  • If applicable, a 3.0 GPA in previous graduate program courses
  • Undergraduate statistics course with a grade of "C" or better; if course was completed 5 or more years prior to admission, applicants are highly encouraged to update their knowledge of statistics
  • Undergraduate research course with a grade of "C" or better; if course was completed 5 or more years prior to admission, applicants are highly encouraged to update their research skills

Residency Requirements

The AGNP program is available to nurses currently practicing in Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Texas, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming.

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP)

The DNP in Leadership at Boise State welcomes applicants with master's degree in various fields. This is a post-master's program. Students must attend three to four Executive Sessions on campus. The remainder of the requirements are completed online.

The DNP program at Boise State is leadership focused and does not prepare graduates for an APRN role. Boise State does offer a nurse practitioner program leading to a master's degree.

Application Requirements (not all inclusive)

  • Valid, unencumbered RN license or advanced nursing practice license from within the United States
  • Master's Degree in Nursing from CCNE or ACEN accredited School of Nursing or master's degree in a related field and a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing from CCNE or ACEN accredited nursing program. Students who possess a master's degree in a related field may be required to take additional graduate courses
  • Cumulative GPA of 3.0 in undergraduate nursing coursework
  • Cumulative GPA of 3.0 in Master's program

Residency Restrictions

Boise State's DNP is available to applicants from all states with the exception of Georgia, Louisiana, Tennessee, and West Virginia.

AGNP Nurse Practitioner Graduate Certificate - Acute and Primary Care

  • 19 credit hours (four semesters)
  • Two on-campus clinical intensives (7-10 days each during Summer semester)
  • Two online courses
  • Three, precepted clinical rotations
  • Completion of 512 clinical hours (448 hours will be in a precepted clinical setting, providing direct patient care)

Clinical Requirements

An experienced preceptor and three clinical rotations are required for the certification.

Residency Requirement

The AGNP Graduate Certificate programs are available to nurse practitioners in Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Texas, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming.

AGNP Certificate Admission (not all inclusive)

  • Baccalaureate degree in nursing from CCNE or ACEN accredited nursing program
  • Master's degree in nursing from a CCNE or ACEN accredited nursing program
  • GPA of at least 3.0 from graduate degree program
  • Valid, unencumbered RN license issued by a state or territory of the United States
  • Valid, unencumbered NP license issued by a state or territory of the United States
  • National board certification (AANP, ANCC) allowing practice as a nurse practitioner

The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) accredited the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (pre-licensure and RN-BS tracks) programs, the Master's Nursing programs, and the Doctor of Nursing Practice programs at Boise State University.

Boise State University is accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU).
