Schools for profit

 I just want to let students beware of schools for profit; I just started a LVN class; I was kind of weary about it but I wanted to get license quick. There were 3 terms; now keep in mind I was a CNA for over 5 years so I knew something and then they had students who never worked in the medical field. I found out it was fast paced after enrollment; they were throwing test at us as soon as we started. Now why were the ex CNA were failing including myself and the one's with no experience were passing. So if you dont make it out of term one you will be dropped from the school; with still having to pay loan back. One mistake the made was " the director came in and I quote" if you need help in math we are to tutor you for 30 minutes after school; and if your math is not good you mabe dropped from school. Then here come the big one " we had students from the last class that just ended and is getting ready for graduation;but we had to drop a few of them because the math scores were not good." now I thought long and hard and got the hell out of that school. I figured why would I keep going and at the end I still can be dropped from school and still owe back 27,000.00 regardless if the rest of my grades are passing. I hurry up and got the hell out of there not owing anything. why am I the only one who took heed to this statement. oh yeah those students who couldnt graduate still have to pay the loan back because they went through all 3 terms. I heard a few of them got so angry the trashed a few of the staff cars. Well I think I did the smart thing; Im now in community college earning my associate for R.N I rather just start from the bottom and learn what I have to including math the hard way to make sure Im a dam good nusrse. Has anyone went to southwest college in Los Angeles for RN and is there anyone out there who has been in similar situations. Please comment and beware of the schools they promise you one thing but just want your money. JC may be seem hard and long but it will pay off in the longrun. Just keep thinking I can do this and Im going to do this. And you will make it

It seems you did the right thing for yourself. BUT, I can also see thier point... if the student is not good at mathm, who would want them to be their nurse if they can't calculate how much of a medication to give? Overdosages lead to problems, including death. It is extremely important to be good at math. Mind you, there isn't a whole lot of math to do, so if can't handle the few types of calculations and conversions nurses need to know... by all means... you should not be an RN.

I've had my share of for-profit-school. Once I graduate, I will continue my education at a public school too. Prices are insane in private schools, but they usually get you on the field a lot faster. Still, it's not for everyone. If I had know then what I knwo now, I would've also bailed my school, but realized it when I was too deep into the program.

Good for you! Good luck too !!! :)

I was about to apply to a for profit school to get my ADN. I was so excited to get started ASAP! The price for the school is 50,000 and its not even accredited by the NLNAC. I cant believe I even considered paying this much. It wasnt until this week that I realized I needed to do what every other nursing student has done, start at the bottom and work my way up. As tempting as the school was (getting to start right away) I am happy to say that starting September I will be attending my local community college and taking the necessary pre-reqs for their nursing program. The total for this program is about 16,000. 16,000 for an accredited school dollars compared to 50,000 for a non accredited school...wow, I cant believe it took me so long to realize what a mistake I would be making.
