Schooling Help

Published

So now that I have made the decision to go back to school and to follow a career in emergency medicine, I am deciding schooling. There is a school near me that offers a great two year course that graduates you with a LPN certification. Or i can go to my local community college for an associated in nursing. I would like to find, in the long wrong, a job in the ER or a similar type of unit. I prefer more of a hands on, busy, emergency type position and am trying to find the proper schooling to prepare me for that...

Simply put, an LPN won't find the kind of employment you seek. Emergency medicine requires much more than the scope of practice of an LPN allows. I'm sure someone will come on to tell me that there are definitely LPNs in the ER where they work, I'm also sure that more and more nowadays the nursing that is expected (and would be expected of a new hire) requires more than they are allowed to do.

RN is your only realistic option if you wish to follow the path you're talking about.

On a side-note: two years for an LPN cert? Wonder what's in it that's not offered in the 10-month courses that also get you to that NCLEX exam? Seems to me the time would be better spent applied to an ADN.

Very good to know, thank you for your time. And as you said, im sure people in that position will disagree, but RN is going to allow more opportunity everywhere, as apposed to others specific areas/situations. Thank you again
