Question

School Nurses: When is everyone back?

School Nurses: What are your protocols this year?

Where are you located & what are this year’s protocols?

I’m in Indiana.  I go back Wednesday, the kids a week later (8/11).  This year masks are optional (so probably 3 people will wear them).  Not sure how much distancing will be maintained...I know 6-12 physically can’t since there’s no virtual option this year, K-5 might be able to keep some distance.  School contacts will not be quarantined but will have mask and distancing restrictions for those 2 weeks at school if they’re not vaccinated.  So this should be fun.  I think I’m dreading this year more than last.

What Members Are Saying
Members are discussing the logistical burdens of returning to school amidst inconsistent COVID-19 protocols, including "test and stay" programs, modified quarantines, and rigorous testing schedules. Arguments center on the tension between the necessity of in-person learning and the resulting nurse burnout from managing high caseloads with minimal support. While some regions mandate universal masking, others remain optional or provide no guidance. It remains unresolved how schools will manage impending staffing shortages, sibling-linked outbreaks, and the practical implementation of complex state mandates in underprepared districts.

I'm officially back 8/30, kids will be back on 9/1. Currently, the state has told us that masks are "strongly recommended" for K-6, but it is still optional and that if the district decides to mandate masking, we cannot mandate vaccinated students. All other COVID protocols are out the window (except in the health offices). Information about close contacts and quarantining guidance is forthcoming.

With the Delta Variant and no mask mandate, I too, am very nervous for what this year will bring.

I’m in Ohio. My first day back is Aug 18th. Kids (elementary) come the 19th. No directions have been given yet but I do think..and hope that masks will be required for students and staff.

My first day back was 8/2 and the kids start 8/10.

Mid Sep....fell and broke my proximal humerus. ORIF yesterday....gah!

Thx  surgery yesterday. ORIF  All good until the nerve block started to wear off!

Staff are back 8/17, kids are back 8/25.  We are starting school as normal with no Covid precautions other than enhanced cleaning that was put in place last year.

Hope you heal quickly, Nutmegge!!

The official start date for students is August 17, but they pick up their schedules on the 16th.    I have a few that are scheduled to some in for tags or catheters.   The school nurse says she'll hang with me through the first few just to make sure I transition well.    Can hardly wait.

I never left! But I now work year round (but did take some very much needed vacation time in July).

The rest of my nursing staff is back August 23rd, students back August 30th.

Well..I was very wrong. No masks. No directions about anything yet. And no meetings planned before school starts next week. I’m completely shocked and so disappointed and furious. I have no words. I feel like I am screwed this year and feeling pretty hopeless ?

I started 2 weeks ago and we are already closed down ?.

Honestly, I am relieved. I literally had sick kids from 7:45-1:00 back to back on most days. PLUS trying to do all the covid stuff and my REGULAR work. I was already burnt out.

I get to recharge for a bit over a week. HA.
May the odds be forever in your favor guys!

We're not closed down yet, but we've gone back to what they did for parts of last year (temperature checks, etc... coming through the door).   It's an all-hands-on-deck type thing, so rather than the school nurse helping me at this point, I'm spending a good amount of time on general population health.
