School nurse for special education and disabilities

Published

I was offered a job as a school nurse working with high school children with developmental/intellectual disabilities and some have multi-medical needs. I am a new grad RN and am now feeling unsure of my decision to accept the position. Are there any RNs out there with experience in this that can give some advice?

It didn't take long at all to feel comfortable with the students. It did however take longer to get to know the support staff and the dynamics of being a nurse in a school setting. I would say about a month in I was getting comfortable. By mid school year, I had staff coming to talk to me about their issues lol. Saying that, I was very comfortable in my position. I have made some amazing friends in this whole process too.

The best part is greeting the students every morning, they are always smiling and so happy to see me. I have some that say bye to me everyday, wishing me a good night or weekend.

The worst part is trying to help a student with needs out of their control and my control, meaning relying on parents that need to do something, but don't. That really is the worst part.
