School favoring its own grads?

Did you attend a school affiliated with a hospital? If so, does the school favor its own grads for hiring after graduation?

My school is affiliated with a hospital and I plan to apply there after graduation. I haven't heard one way or the other if it favors its own graduates.

To some extent, that is probably true.

Hospitals affiliated with nursing education programs have the advantage of having familiarity with those new grad applicants. For applicants, that can be a dual-edged sword. If a student had an excellent reputation, that may be beneficial in a Job Search when other applicants are "unknown quantities." On the other hand, a student who had a less-than-stellar student record may face a tougher time interviewing at his/her school's hospital where that reputation is known.

It is also likely that some new grads applying to work at their school's hospital may have employment agreements in exchange for assistance with school expenses. Unless these candidates are total screw-ups, they will usually receive some preference in hiring, since the hospital already has money invested in them.

There is also the practical consideration that the school wants to be able to boast a high employment rate for its graduates, and can accomplish that, in part, by hiring them.

I went to a hospital affiliated college that definitely did not favor its own grads...they hired from all over the state, out of state, and even from the competitor hospital across town.

I felt compelled to reply to this post because the hospital affiliated with the school I turned down did NOT favor it's own graduates. This was a big surprise to me and I only found out because I called the career center at the school and HR at the hospital. The school folks reluctantly admitted their graduates were facing a hard time (though not as hard as January-May 2008). HR told me it didn't matter if you went to the school when it came to hiring. This, coupled with my inability to get a (big) loan, told me I should not be doing this.

In my area, the two hospitals who have their own nursing schools do give preference to their own graduates. They do not guarantee a job for them, however (not counting "years of work in exchange for schooling" agreements)...but they will try to place them in their hospital system if they're suitable candidates.

I'm currently in one of the hospital's school. I'll let you know if a couple of years if I'm hired on ;)
