schedules and new nurse hirees

Published

hi I have worked for Beverly 19 yrs, anyone out there have a experience of working two shift nights and eves, then here comes a nurse who worked in B and gave two weeks notice then came back last week and got my position of full times eves. DON says she cannot work night? Im 54 she is 25 she has no kids. Im hurt, sad, angry the sehedule is out we have no union, I have excellent yearly evaluations. How do you approach this discuss this with both DON and adminstrator? To find out WHY, threaten to quit , give two weeks notice. I am A hodgkins survivor, twice they know two shift affects my health, post cancer fatique been doing the two shifts for a year. I know they can;t seem to hire a nurse to do two shift tho they didnt advertise as such. Call Corp compliance first.? any suggestions would help im just really upset! :uhoh21:

Good lord - they just kicked you off your shift because it was inconvenient for someone else to work their hours?

I'd tell my boss *I* couldn't work nights either, and I'd be prepared to go elsewhere. While I note you have 19 years invested there, is it safe to assume there is no pension plan of any sort to concern yourself over?

OK - now lets talk about the practicality of it lol.

First of all, I saw RED at your post. I can't believe (yes I can - I've seen it too much here and in my own travels) that a newbie gets to choose her preference and the folks with seniority have to move to accomodate. I actually don't blame the other nurse - she's just asking for what she wants - I blame mgt for not saying no.

When did the schedule come out? I would encourage you to contact your supervisor at her next availability - I presume tomorrow morning? Tell her you need to meet with her over a scheduling issue. Then very calmly ask if there is a reason your schedule was changed without notice. Look in your employee handbook. I'm sure there's something about positions and shifts and changing of same (likely something to the effect that mgt reserves the right to adjust staffing as needed to meet the needs of the facility, but it doesn't hurt to look.)

When mgt responds to your schedule question with something about difficulty fillling shift, I'd inquire about why you were chosen to be bumped. (I suspect your are at the top of their pay scale, and they might secretly be OK with you leaving so they can replace you with someone cheaper.) If you get no satisfaction from your meeting, Grieve through whatever process is allowed you under your employee policies (even tho you don't have a union, I'm positive your HR folks have a policy for complaints.)

Finally, do be on the immediate hunt for a position elsewhere for backup if this arrangement is not suitable. One of the problems with threatening to leave (which you may have to do eventually, after you have all your ducks is a row) is that they might actually take you up on it. Protect yourself first at all costs.

This scheduled was put out friday night I was working nights, . I first called the DON this am just now, she said I thought you wanted to cont to work the nights and eves. I said yes but this was after YOU said the new LPN could not work nights {I have to work 64 hrs in a two week payperiod }to keep my health insurance due to the fact of my cancer history. I also expressed not angryat new LPN . The DON said well this must be a misunderstanding , and perhaps I can change this next month. meaning May,, I said well it was in writeing a long time ago I wanted one shift to work and that was eves, ps I did 10 yrs on nights before my illness. I also told her I didnt appreciate the remark " IWAS HAPPY AS A LARK "to work to work eves and night DON words. I remarked that is a lie!!!DON got quiet, Adminstrator wont be back untill wednesday. Anyway maybe shot myself in the foot but we have a Employes assistance number i can call to bring out the big guns they will not approve and DON knows I can call them at any time too, still maybe not win but surely upset the cat box that is full of S--T anyway all this was done on the phone I don;t quite have enough guts to do in the face and at 5'7 105 lbs trying terible hard to gain weight im not really scarrey or can enough pretend to be. . Anyway hope this makes sence im between crying and screaming but cooling down, Im due to go to work this eve , gonna make some calls to see whats open for jobs as you say , im good about the ducks in a row, got a good raise and very organized but still got crapped on or attempted dump anyway. Thanks for your support and input any other is welcomed too. jet :balloons:
