Hi everyone! I'm concerned about something that happened today when I was taking care of my patient. I started a new job taking care of a patient who is in his 50's with diabetes and MS. He requires total care and doesn't have feeling in much places.
Anyways yesterday he had two diarrhea episodes and it being my 5th day, it was unexpected, it rarely happens but it did. I took care of everything and something that I always do is throw out the insulin syringes everytime I use them. I have to give him 20 units and 40 units.
This morning when I was changing the bed an uncapped syringe was in my patients bed. I did not realize until the LPN that works between our shifts saw it in the wash. I apologized for missing the syringe and explained that I throw away the needles after every use.
There is another person who takes care of him at night and the other person must've forgotten to throw it away.
I feel terrible that I didn't feel it or see it. I take responsibility when I mess up and if somethings my fault. I'm still new to this job so I hope this doesn't go against me. â¤ï¸

Your human. Give yourself a pass. You sound like a very good caregiver.
