Scalp Fungal Infection (scalp ringworms)

Hello everyone,

It's my first time coming here to post anything. Could I please have all the nurses and futures nurses help me out? I have this little girl cousin who I think is 13 or 14. I'm not really close to her or her family or anything, just their son who we use to hang out when we were kids (I'm 25 now). My family had a graduation party today for my brother who graduated and she invited over my extended-extended aunt (ehhh I don't know how close they are connceted with my family but that's not the point. The point is that auntie is the mother of the 13 to 14 year old girl) came over. I came out of room to join the celebration, and saw that her scalp literally showed her scalp with exeption of a few hundred hair spread throughout her top scalp. If I could describe it to you all, I would say it looks like a sumo westler head but with a few hundred hair still sticking up but enough hair loss to reveal the scalp noticeably. I went to ask what had happen to her hair with my mom, and she said that she had a scalp fungal infection. When it started my little cousin had been scratching and pulling her hairout, she had been covering it up by wearing a hat, so her mother wouldn't find out. I don't know why she didn't say anything to her mom and let it progress so far to the point near where her hair has been able to fully grow back for a few years now (sorry for vague numbers of year as I am not close to my their family and had been kind of absent of any family information. But that's a different story). Pretty much it's been a while now and her hair growth has'nt improved. The infection is now clear but the damage seems to be present. Honestly I feel bad for her, she is just a kid, and probably didn't know any better to inform her parent of her scalp infection, possibly thinking it might resolve on its own. What do you guys think with this type of infection, does it usually cause permanent hair loss? Did she pull out the follicle in her attempt to relieve the itching? Will it ever grow back? Can you guys think of any treatment that could help her grow her hair back so I can try to inform her mom of interventions she can do to help. I just hate seeing heavy stuff like this. Any advice from all the experience nurses or anyone would help load. Much love to everyone thanks.
