Sarasota Hospitals

Published

Hello All,

Looking into relocating from New England to the Sarasota area. I have 19 years experience in psychiatric nursing. Just wondering what to expect for pay (I know it will be less) and the reputation of the area hospitals.

Thanks to the poster who provided the detailed instructions on obtaining a Florida RN license.

If you're coming to FL, you might want to switch specialties. There's not a lot of psych jobs. FL is one of the many red states that didn't expand Medicaid, so psych care is lacking. Think old people: cardiac, neuro (stroke), and geriatrics are the nursing jobs here. I know Sarasota Memorial has a psych unit. The pay is $22-35 an hour. There's also Bay Pines, the VA psych unit, in St. Petersburg. I don't know what they pay, but I had friends who thought Bay Pines was fantastic, and since it's the VA you'd get those government benefits. It's a commute from Sarasota, though.

Good luck.

Hi NewYorkerGirl, I like the logo. Thanks for the helpful information. Are you living in this area currently, and if so how do you like it? My parents have lived near Tampa for 15 years so I have been able to visit a lot. We rented a house for a week in August to get the real feel of what summers, shopping and the commute would be like. If I can get a job we would really consider moving. Thanks again for your comments.

I've lived in the Tampa area for 11 years. I really dislike Tampa, but I like St. Pete, Sarasota, Lakewood Ranch, and Venice. I hope to move away soon, because 9 months of humidity and summer a year is just too much for me, lol. But new grad jobs are so limited so I'm stuck here for now.

Hi New York Girl. Thank you again for all of the information. It was nice to hear that you like the Sarasota area. Hopefully being "experienced" will help me out. Good luck with your job search as well.
