San Francisco 2015 JOB Market for New Nurses

Published

Hi,

My husband and I are thinking of moving to San Francisco. I'm in Chicago now, relatively new grad, working at med-surgical floor for about 3 months now. I'm wondering about how it is finding nursing jobs in San Francisco, in any settings. I can imagine its hard since I don't have significant experience yet. I'm open to any nursing position or setting. Any advice?

I've lived in San Francisco going on 6 years now. It's a tough job market for RN's. That said, many RN's I work with (I'm a hospital-based NP) are from out of state originally. Also, since plenty of places use travelers, that is a potential way for you to enter the RN workforce here if your experience is good enough to get you a travel assignment. Be aware that the salary for RN's in San Francisco is among the highest (if not the highest) in the nation and most travel companies are unable to match that salary.

My tips:

- wait until you have enough experience

- visit San Francisco more than once and see if you really like it, it's not for everyone for sure

- never fall into the same mistake I made of comparing home/apt prices here with that of the Midwest or you'll end up in a bad neighborhood

- only move if you have a job offer and have a start date
