Can anyone tell me what hospitals are in San Anotonio and which you believe have a good rep. ?

There are many good hospitals in the Medical Center in San Antonio. University is the top rated, followed by St Lukes, Methodist and the VA. All are respected in San Antonio.

I worked in San Antonio for a few years back in early 90's. University was an absolute hell hole and pay was LOUSY! On the floor, every nurse had 12 patients at all times, PCA's had 24. There was NO charge nurse....you had to spend what seems like hours on the phone trying to find the right team of baby docs just to get MD orders. MD orders were valid for only 24 hours for vital things like IV fluids! I remember they were talking about doing away with OT pay for nurses "since nurses are considered to be professionals".

I think I went home crying every day until I (thankfully!) got canned because I couldn't handle the stress. If you have lots of experience working in hard conditions it may be a good learing opportunity to work there; otherwise my advice is don't even think about it. VA is attached to University via over the street walkway, the same MDs go back and forth, but I don't know what the working conditions are like there.

Other than that, I worked at North Central Baptist which had good working conditions at the time. I did float to another Baptist hospital in town once, it was pretty bad on med/surg; fast-paced 8 patients/nurse on nights and no help to speak of.

I seriously doubt anything has changed re working conditions in these places.
