Samuel Merritt University FNP Insight

Published

Hello to all SMU students or perspective students.

I just wanted to put my name out there and see if anyone had any questions about SMU and the FNP program.

I just graduated and I am willing to pass on all my inside information to anyone who is interested.

Hi SkiBumNP - Thanks for your reply. How do I "DM" you my email?

SkiBumNP,

I am currently enrolled in the SMU FNP program. Do you have any recommendation on how to find preceptorship now? I spoke to (emailed) the coordinator, but they don't directly answer your question regarding preceptorship. (almost seem like it's a secret until it is happening). I want to gain more experience in acute as NP, any suggestions?

Did the program provide you with clinical instructors?

Specializes in Emergency,.

The program does (did) arrange clinical placement. However, if you want any acute care placement then you will likly need to arrange that yourself.

Specializes in CCRN, lots of neuro, travel nursing, cardiac, ER.

Hi there SkiBumNP,

I am debating doing the online FNP program. Any thoughts on this? Long-term my goal is to work urgent care.

Also, how difficult was it for you to find a job?

Thanks!

Hello, SkiBumNP. I am thinking to apply to SMU. How was NP program there? Can you tell me about assignments there: lots of writing, tests, group work? Did you do full time or part time program plan?

@nurseRNatalia - in hindsight the academic program was not want I wanted. I would look at going to a PA program. If you can do this part time then you aren't working hard enough. in CA the base number of clinical hours is 550, SMU asks their students to do 650. I did 1200 and look back and should have done more. I also took PA classes in addition to my NP classes because I wasn't getting the medical education i wanted.

Hi SkiBumNP. You did a lot of clinical hours, amazing. I heard for RNs who worked in hospital settings NP program is easier. Not sure where did you work. Have you passed NP exam after the SMU? I can nt find any passing rates for schools? do this stat exist?

I never thought about PA. Why is it better that NP?

Can I email you please? my email is [email protected]

Hi everyone -

Does anyone know if there is time to work (as a nurse) during the NP portion of the program if students are on the full-time course?

It looks like there are only 6 credits each semester - at least during the first 3 semesters of the NP portion. I'm wondering if it would be possible to work during this time to help eliminate the burden of taking out student loans.

Thanks!

Does anyone know what is the group interview look like? This is my first time invited to interview and never had a group interview. What is the format? are they going around and asking specific question from each applicant based on their resume? Any insight would be appreciate it.

Hi Everyone,

I know this post was first published in 2011 but I am writing in hopes to gain some insight in the Samuel Merritt online FNP program. Has anyone recently completed the online FNP program? How was the school workload? Is it manageable to work and also complete the program? What types of assignments did you have to do? Do the instructors or material prepare you for the tests? Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Emily
