Salem State University Fall 2012 BSN program

Published

Hey, I was just starting this thread to see if anyone had heard back from Salem State University in regards to the BSN Fall 2012 program. I am still waiting to hear back, but was looking to see if anyone else had heard anything? This is the main nursing program I applied to, so I am hoping that I get in, otherwise I may have to rethink my future plans. I was also accepted into NECC's nursing program, but am on the wait-list for this Fall, which means I would have to wait until Fall 2013 if a spot doesn't open up :(. Unfortunately I already have three degree's and no more courses to take, so it would not be ideal to wait that long.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Maz,

I also applied to Salem State's program. I checked my status online earlier this week and the message said that the final decisions go out to everyone in the middle of the month. I assume this means next week. I have a prior BA and would love to get my BSN (ASN route would take too long and I just wanna be done... Accelerated programs are too fast paced for me and I need to work...) I had applied to UMass Boston's program but was rejected at the beginning of February. So right now I'm in the same boat as you with Salem being my last shot to get in anywhere this fall. Overall, the wait is really killing me >_

How are you holding up?

Hey lizbee, I also checked my status which informed me that notices would be going out mid-march. I am sick of the waiting game, it seems to me you know what that is like. I know exactly what you mean about the ASN route, it is way too time consuming especially if you have to work. I am excited to know either way I guess, it'll be awesome to get in, but right now I'd just like to know either way so I can make other plans if need be! I am in an emt course right now, so if I don't get in and have a year to fill for school I just may get my paramedic certificate. Do you have any other program (s) you applied to?

I know how you feel... Any answer would feel great at this point!! >_

BTW if you don't mind me asking, do you have a previous degree from anywhere else?

It is nice to know that I am not in this alone! I hope we both hear good news from Salem state soon. I have three prior associate degrees. One in criminal justice, one in liberal studies with a concentration in biology and the other in general studies. I am hoping that all I have left to take ( if I am accepted) would be my nursing courses. I know you said you had a prior BA, if you don't mind me asking what was it in?

I don't mind you asking at all :). I got my BA in Sociology (with a minor in Biology). Long story short: I thought I wanted to be a doctor but after much soul searching realized nursing was a perfect fit for me, changed my major my junior year, finished and have been trying to get into nursing programs ever since.

I think its very impressive that you have not 1 but 3 associate degrees and now you're going for a fourth... FREAKING AWESOME :)...

In terms of the courses at Salem State, I met with one of the nursing program counselors and according to her I would have to take Intro Bio 2 and General Chem 2 but could contest them (I took them during my undergrad years). Lifespan only counts for one of their Psychology courses and they have a specific elder adult psych class that can only be taken with them. I also took an Ethics class at MassBay (where I am currently) and that may not transfer either if I were to be accepted (I'll fight for that course transfer too). Life would be so much easier if transfer credit could be awarded; I'd rather devote that energy towards the actual nursing classes... Sorry I think my ramblings have turned into a mini rant xD

I seem to check my status more than once a day including the 'awarded transfer credit' section :uhoh21:... I just really wish I knew their answer already :-/

I too started my venture wanting to be a physician, realizing a little way through that I wanted to be a nurse. At least having the BA you have makes you eligible for the accelerated degree programs, although like you said they are very fast paced. I totally understand about the transfer of credit. I have over 130 credits done, and I am pretty sure only a portion will transfer. What sucks for me is that if I wait until 2013, my A & P I will expire :( I would hate to retake that again, especially since I did so well in it the first time around. I also seem to check my status all the time. It still just says the same thing about notices going out by mid-march. I hope we find out this week, and I hope it is good news :). It would be nice if we both got in!!!! We would already be starting with a friend! I'll post anything as soon as I hear. And did your application show any transfer credit awarded?

Its always better to start with a buddy at least you're not alone. I check my status all the time including the transfer credit, which I would assume would've been a clue to my standing within the program. I have no transfer credit awarded whatsoever :(. It really is like a bad habit now. I don't know how much more of this waiting I can take, but I really am wanting for it to be good news for the both of us. I will make sure to post anything I find out as well.

BTW, I looked up the minimum GPA to be considered and it was about a 2.5 so I'm hoping that mine will redeem me from my undergrad days :/... Again, I'm praying for the both of us :)

Bad news....didn't make it. They accepted me into the bio program. I guess I'll be waiting one more year to start. I guess it doesn't seem too long in the spectrum of things. I really hope you got in! One of us should at least have been accepted. Let me know how things turn out! Best of luck!!! Maz

i'm so sorry :(, now you have me really worried (i really wish i knew what to say to you). i'll probably get something in the mail tomorrow :/... i will definitely keep you updated. what are your plans now?

It's okay. I do have a seat in a program for 2013... If one for 2012 doesnt open up. I checked my online status and it said congratulations you have been admitted to the biology program :( my second choice. I think i may look into phlebotomy and perhaps my paramedic. I really hope u get in and don't be discouraged by my fate... It just wansn't meant to be for me.

That good I'm happy you have a place for next year. I keep checking my status online all the time and nothing has changed at all. I don't know what I'll do if I don't get in, maybe try an accelerated program (my absolute last choice), but you never know what will happen. I just don't know where else to apply to since it seems that you practically have to have a 4.0 to get in and sometimes even that doesn't help you very much... I would've never thought nursing school would be this hard (its bordering on ridiculous especially since admissions committees love to admit ppl who barely care about school or becoming a nurse)... I'm sorry for another rant but I've seen things at a particular community college and it just infuriates me to no end.

Anywho, its always nice to know that you are never alone in going through this tumultuous and emotional process :)
