Sacramento State or San Jose State BSN Help!

Published

Hi all!

I am currently waiting to hear back from both Sac State and San Jose State for the BSN program.

Do any of you have done either program? What were the pros/cons of each program?

Sac State is 2 years versus San Jose State being 3 years. Do you all think that third year is very important? My feeling has been that it would be better to start working, as you would gain more experience doing so.

They are both going to let us know if we are admitted right before the intent to enroll deadline (May 1st), so I feel like I should make a decision really soon...

I feel like I have worked so much over the past 3 years to get to nursing school. Balancing work, school, volunteering and my personal life has been quite a challenge, but knowing I would one day be a nursing student always made it worth it. I am so eager to finally find out which school I will get in.

Please help!

Your decision will probably be based upon which one admits you. If you are accepted for both programs, use your criteria. Distance from home with associated travel costs, feel for campus generated on visit to campus and nursing dept., info gleaned from questions answered at info sessions, such as class size, etc. The third year at SJSU is misleading as it stretches courses into what would typically be the student's 'sophomore' year. Not really a factor in making the program more, or less, convenient.

Thank you for your reply calioter3.

Do you mean that the course load is lighted as SJSU because they spread out the classes more?

I made the mistake of not going to the info session at Sac State because it is a bit more difficult for me to get there than SJSU... However, I do like the campus better than SJSU. I was hoping I would get to go visit the nursing school after/if I got admitted, but the decisions have been pushed back to April 30th, so I will have to make my decision the day I get an email.

As you said, I may not have that decision to make if I get into only one, but I just want to be prepared if I am admitted to both.

Hi Anaisbri,

Just curious which school you ended up going to. I am currently considering moving back to California and starting to do my prerequisites and trying to learn as much about the Norcal nursing schools as I can.

Cheers

Where do you live now if you don't mind me asking? It might be better to just do nursing wherever it is you currently are located. California is very competitive.

Hi Anais,

I currently love in New Zealand but am a US citizen and grew up in CA. Im considering going to school here because its cheaper and there's no prerequisites but that means it may be very hard to work in the USA in the future. To take the NCLEX you have to meet the particular states educational requirements and if I wanted to work in California I would have to take a few classes even after being a qualified RN in NZ.

It is insane how many prereqs and hoops one has to jump through in California...!

Cheers
