S.O.S.!!! New grad RN interview for L&D

Published

Hello everyone,

I have an interview for a a university hospital in NJ's L&D department. Unlike my other interviews as a new grad, I will just be meeting with the Nurse Manager and not with a Nurse Recruiter.

Can anyone tell me what to expect in a new grad interview for a L&D position? I know they will ask why L&D and behavioral questions. But will I be asked specific "what would you do?" NCLEX-type maternity questions?

I am nervous and would appreciate any help.

Thanks!!!!

I've never had a scenario question in an interview, although I always run through possible answers before I've interviewed.

Be sure to ask about the length of orientation, what classes you will attend, etc. Make sure the manager understands your desire to learn everything they want you to know! A mature enthusiasm is a good thing.

Best of luck to you!

I had to talk through a head to toe assessment in an interview - so maybe prepare a head to toe post-partum assessment!

Also remember that taking your time to answer a question is not a bad thing- you can stall for a sec and gather your thoughts,,"Let me think about that for a minute..." etc. Your confidence is expressed by your demeanor and not be being a know-it-all!

Good luck! Hope you get the job!

I am going to post a few links for you with good advice (and some of my previous responses to this same question).

I interviewed last month for a L&D position and got it. I start Aug. 15! I wish you the best of luck! Keep us posted!

Thank you for all your responses! I will definitely keep these things in consideration. Can I ask, Montessori Mommy and Armygirl7, how do you like L&D nursing?
