I am a new grad with a first time nursing job. I see lots of different things and wonder what is legal and what isn't. First of all is it legal for a LPN to use a Dr. stamp for a rx refill. The Dr.'s note may say they need the med for chronic tx or it may say nothing about the med at all. Or does the Dr. need to be consulted everytime a refill is needed. Confused

I float between different doctors at clinic and it depends on what the doctor likes. One doctor lets his nurse actually write the prescriptions and okay refills as long as labs and doctor visits are up to date. One doctor has you write the prescription out and then she will sign it. One doctor I work for gives verbal okays to call in Rx's. Of course you document that it was a verbal order in the patients chart. And all the doctors must okay narcotics. I think as long as your under the direct supervision of a doctor and feel confident enough in doing more than just having the doctor do all prescriptions, it's okay. There are some doctors that have such a good working relationship that the nurse that the nurse knows exactly what the doctor wants and just does it.
