Rude & Snarky Staff

Published

This has probably been asked before, but how do other clinical instructors deal with rude, snarky, burnt out staff with attitudes? I had a nursing student who was just about brought to tears because of this. I did reassure her but it seems that at every clinical site there is always one staff member with a bad attitude. And they just love giving the nursing students.....****. Sometimes they even give me attitude and snarkiness. I deal with it by maintaining my professionalism with a dose of humor. I just really don't like it when some of the staff take it out on the students.

We were all students at one point in time, but many seem to forget what it was like. What should I do to maintain a positive clinical experience for my students?

This Is another reason I will not be a clinical instructor again. I got so Fed up with the attiude and rudeness by the staff.

I have the student pick a room/patient rather than a nurse to pair with. Then I serve as the nurse. We go in together and assess and do what needs to be done....most of the students end up with a nurse eventually because a select few will help out.

This. Thank you. This is what my instructors did. I rarely saw the staff nurse and I did not bug her unless to tell her what we had done with the patient.

But when students come to my floor the instructors just sit while we the staff nurses are expected to teach the students without extra pay? I am a preceptor on my floor, but that means I get get paid extra for taking time to explain what I am doing.

I thought I would like have students. But it just means extra work for me if their teacher expects me to do all the teaching.

I never paired my students up with a nurse and still got attitude. Even though the student is not being taught by the nurse or paired with one doesn't mean the staff nurse totally neglects her assignment. So therefore the nurse still may have an attitude because she s has to assess her patient and follow up on what ever the student does. Even when I students assigned to my patient that doesn't help me at all. I still assess and carry out the plan of care. I love having students but they can slow you down a bit
