RT to LPN/RN nclex challenge OK your state?

Published

hello nurses, I am an RT in nursing school. My program is one year LPN, next year RN. I have heard rumors that some states allow a Respiratory Therapist to challenge the LPN locally, then come back home, obtain reciprocity, and work back in your home state as an LPN or obtain future RN. I am not talking about local RT to RN education deals, we have that in Florida now, I am talking about travel to a state, challenge exam, get license, come back home. Has anyone heard of this? thank you. John

Sorry, but that is icorrect information. All Boards of Nursing require actual documented schooling in an approved school of nursing or technical school to be able to sit for the NCLEX-PN exam.

The only exeception is for those that were US military corpsmen and they can challenge the exam only in Virginia and California. And those licenses cannot be endorsed to any other state.

The NCLEX exam has reciprocity, but you must meet the educational requirements for that state. The nursing license does not have reciprocity.

The only programs that are around for RTs to RN have been the program thru Excelsior College and that is not accepted in all states either.

In other words, what you have heard is rumor only.

thanks. We do have RT to RN programs at our Florida community colleges and through a local hospital school. I am already good to go at school, though. can't wait to be behind the wheel! thanks again. john

Yes, there are also some of those programs locally, but again, you must complete the hours in a an approved school of nursing. There is no way to challenge the exams before you have been thru the training.

The programs out there for RT to RN were based on what was originally done with the Excelsior program.

State Boards of Nursing have gotten very strict on this. And they are getting stricter on the requirements.
